In our part of Oz we just buy wheat from local cereal farmers. In winter we throw in a bit of barley to heat the chooks up. We use layers pellets about 10% of the time, rest is free range and scraps from us and the neighbours. I throw a bucket of shell grit in the yard every now and then, but if the girls find a heap of slaters and earwigs not really any need - more of a summer thing when the heat reduces the bug numbers right down. Definitely natural foods give happier healthier chooks in our experience, which for me goes back over 50 years now. Can't imagine not having chooks - any place I lived in without them never felt complete.
