IIRC, Onosato already has been involved in a bullying scandal in his short time as a professional!? I hope the YDC is a little wary of Promoting someone too soon. But, with the sumo Onosato has shown recently, he could very well win the next two basho or at least win one and be the runner-up in another. Then a title win as sekiwake can be viewed as part of a three basho evalution...

If he wins the next basho, I don't think he would be promoted, but it could get him some flexibility in January. He may be able to get the promotion with only a runner-up in January if he had back-to-back yushos in September and November

I still hope he does well. With all his health problems, Teru deserves to retire. We need a young healthy Yokuzuna. Takerufuji und Ono are on the top of my list.

Nope, he has to be at the rank of Ozeki at his first and second yusho in a row to be promoted. This basho he is at the rank of Sekiwake meaning it wont be counted torwards his Yokozuna promotion. That being said YDC can decide whatever they want, and if Terunofuji decides to retire there might be a chance they speed up Onosatos process if he continues to overperform, but i doubt it.
