If we're talking pre or post Missy. Then it HAS to be pre. The shot lingered on her long enough that regeneration should've started before the cut. As mentioned by someone else, before modern who there was a period where the Master stole bodies rather than regenerate, but also, I believe John Simm's Master when he said that he would never stand with the Doctor, and would absolutely kill himself to ensure that doesn't happen, however, all we know of Missy in relation to John Simm's Master is that she is after him in the regeneration cycle, no reason to assume that she's DIRECTLY after him in that cycle though.

After Classic Who but before Modern there was a period where the Master was out of regenerations and kept stealing various bodies. In this episode he said he took Os place. Also, he is using his compression device to shrink/kill people which he hasn’t used since classic. Also there was a classic who episode called Time Flight where there was an airplane traveling in time. It might be a throw back.

I think he's post-Missy. Simm asked if he was going to regenerate into Missy, and her response was "welcome to the sisterhood", a heavy implication that he was about to regenerate into her. The fact he's more like Simm doesn't mean he's after Simm and before Missy, as a few people have suggested.

I hope it's pre because otherwise it's just undoing all of Moffats creative work with the character over Missys 3 seasons. Chibnall managed to pull off one good episode in 2 years I just hope it wasn't at the expense of what came before. But Chibnall and Whittaker seem to have nothing but disdain for the fans so it wouldn't surprise me.

Either way, it's fantastic that Doctor Who is making us think about theories again. Last season only had one question to be asked. This season we've already got so many.

While I do think that this version is between Simms and Gomez, I also think that with a show like this they could easily find away around Missy’s ‘death’. They never actually confirmed that she died, they just implied. They purposely left room for doubt. Someone could’ve came for her at the end or something.

Missy died, she couldn't regenerate, but we've no idea how many regenerations there has been between Simms and missy, which leaves plenty of room for O and possibly others afterwards, before missy.

Guessing Pre-Missy post Simms the mannerisms are so much like how Simms played the role.And back in Season 9 when she met the Daleks (The Witch's Familiar) she was asked if she was a Time Lord and she replied "Time Lady thank you some of us can afford the upgrade. Similar to how the Doctor said she got an upgrade in this episode

A fun theory could be, if this is a post-Missy incarnation, they push Missy away deep down inside like the War Doctor because her incarnation was so different and ended up the reverse of how the Master usually is, and then this new incarnation is much more of a loose cannon like the classic Masters were

I think it’s either post simm but pre Gomez or post missy. It’ll most likely be post missy, to be less confusing. I wouldn’t be mad about that because I love when they do callbacks of past events

I picked Pre, only because Chibnall (love him or loathe him) was/is a spokesperson member of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society (oldest Whovian fanclub) and KNOWS his lore. When the Fourth Doctor was fighting the Master on Gallifrey, it was already the 'Thirteenth Master'; he'd already used up all his regenerations. There are at least 12 old school Masters we don't know the face of... something Chibnal would cash in on.

As much as I would love an Alternate Reality Master, realistically I think it's post-Missy. As Missy herself once said, "OK, cutting to the chase. Not dead, back, big surprise, never mind."

Well, considering the fact that there's that whole "Multiple Earths" thread that still hasn't been followed up on, I'm inclined to thin it's either Post-Missy or "Other." if it is post-missy, I'm a decent bit nervous cause if they undo everything that happened in season 10 I'll be pretty upset - but it's not as if they can't make it work. I'm holding out an opinion there until we get part two. But if this is a post-missy master, there is the chance that he's trying to help in his own chaotic wild and past insane way. but the multi-earth thing also has me thinking it could be an "other" scenario. this might be an alternate universe thing going down, and that might be an alternate timeline's master or something along those lines. with only the first part of skyfall to go off of, it's too hard to say right now the show and writers clearly has a VERY intimate understanding of the entirety of the Master's history when making this season, so they couldn't possibly just *ignore* it. If they handle it well, this could be a really good master; but if they don't it'll just be an antagonist no one wanted and that everyone will hate. honestly, it's split right down the middle which way it could go

I really hope it's not post Missy as I feel it would be distasteful to undo all the growth the previous showrunner gave that character. I'm fine with them handwaving a Post-Missy Master coming back to life, I'm definitely not okay if they handwave a Post-Missy Master being evil and trying to kill the Doctor again.

PRE: It would be a fun twist if thats why Missy told Clara she's known the doctor when he was a girl. He probably went to another universe after Missy shot him in that finale to try avoiding being redeem by the doctor later as Missy.

Other: I think he’s the current face for the Thirteenth Doctor. They seem to want each face of The Doctor in the “new series” to have their own version of The Master since Ten’s encounter in Series Three. For some reason they skipped Eleven, though...might put a hole in that theory!!

I think it's a post-Simm, pre-Michelle Gomez Master BUT it really seems like they're gonna deal with alternate realities so I wouldn't be surprised if it's an alternate Master. That'd be really interesting to see! I loved this episode quite a bit

I think they're doing something different and he's from an alternate universe. As he said 'everything you know is a lie'. By doing that you don't diminish the growth Missy had in season 10

The master dies in like every story he/she is in. John Simms master died twice. Why I do think it would be more interesting if it was pre but it’ll be a bit confusing for some fans.

As much as I'd love to see an incarnation in the midst of ones we already know, I think with the new showrunner's fresh approach we'll simply just have him pinpointed as the latest regeneration
