August saying "he's with me" in reference to God Serena was as you guessed, in his heart, like a saying. Brandish did say that August is usually a warm-hearted person, plus he saved Ajeel from Laxus in the beginning of the arc saying it's painful to lose a comrade. He's a caring person but also blindly loyal to Zeref, can't wait for you to find out more about him
