I see why they put the American standards so high. There is an interesting psychology to it. World records are easily deemed unattainable by most in USAW due to drugs, better long-term talent management... However, if you see the American Standard as X, it suddenly seems more attainable just by calling it American. This keeps US lifters aiming higher than they might otherwise chasing lower (more realistic) numbers, and ultimately should accelerate the progression of the sport in America.
