(Complete) Devil In The Waters, Book 2, Chapter 6

At lunch she had a scheduled gym date with Karina. It was a long-standing Thursday yoga class, a once a week get-together they usually followed with a vegan meal at a café on Harwood, south of the 401. But since the party at Tiffany’s, she hadn’t heard from Karina. She passed it off, trying not to fret, knowing that the coming week for Karina would be a busy one; Karina had a work deadline and a lunch with the parents of the new guy she’d been dating since January and she’d worried about it. Karina’d almost skipped the reunion and the party at Tiffany’s altogether, but since going to Tiffany’s had been all Karina’s idea, once Josh and she had agreed to it, Karina knew it would be bad manners to be the one to back out.
Karina witnessed what happened at Tiffany’s. Caught her and Devin in the grass, then hounded them later when they were in the bathroom.
Things that morning at Tiffany's had been worked out; not fixed but smoothed over. There’d been arguments amongst them, Karina, Amy, and two other girls from high school who’d been privy to the scandal; the girls wanted to blame Devin, and she was stuck defending him. After their postulations were presented, she was swayed. She blamed Devin too, and had the others support. Josh shows up in the kitchen, everyone helps her put a lid on that roiling pot, and leaving Tiffany’s altogether should have been the act of turning off the burner. The high school reunion was over, and when she got the reminder next time for their fifteen- or twenty-year, it would go straight in the trash, and she wouldn’t see the majority of those people ever, ever again. No more Devin, for sure.
She’d thought.
It hadn’t quite turned out that way, though. Somehow Devin was still in her life. Somehow she’d managed to make matters worse.
None of the other girls who knew, or at least had been apprised of what happened, were in touch with her, nor were they friends in her normal life. She had two voices coming from her shoulders; the proverbial angel and devil. Amy was the devil, telling her to go for it, get some, all the disparaging things she’d said about Josh, then seeing his penis, teasing, tattling to Devin about it. Amy loved that Kimmy’d met Devin in the apartment days after Tiffany’s party. Whatever it was about Amy, if you had something to confess she did this thing that had you admitting all your sins, welcoming it, more than absolving, she was encouraging . . .
The angel on her shoulder was Karina, but Karina wasn’t talking to her.
When Karina didn’t show for the yoga class, it sunk her heart. Made her feel anew all the guilt for what she’d done. And Karina didn’t know what had happened since the party . . .
Ten minutes into the class though, sweat trickling her back already, the door opens and Karina’s hustling with her mat slung over a shoulder, tip-toeing to the back of the class.
She’d waved and, thank god, Karina’d come to her, lay her mat in the spot Kimmy’d reserved. They exchanged smiles, but she’d be a fool not to notice a stiffness in her friend. They finished the class together, the whole time her stomach getting knotted tighter.

Both of them still in tights, they sat facing each other on the wooden benches in the gym’s changing rooms, women moving around them, disrobing and heading to the showers. Kimmy waited for the coast to clear, knowing Karina was upset, wanting to hear what her friend thought.
“I think I’m still mad at you,” Karina said, unable to look in her eyes, hands clasped between her knees.
“I deserve it,” she said, looking past her shoulder to make sure they wouldn’t be overheard. “I can’t believe you didn’t talk to me all week.”
“I really am mad, Kimmy. . . . And you didn’t call me either.”
“I was afraid. Afraid you’d still be mad at me.”
Karina whispered, “How could you do that . . .?”
“You don’t have to tell me . . .”
“At one point I had my phone in my hand and I was going to call . . .”
Kimmy’s shoulders slumped, her face sullen, looking down She pulled her hair back, held it to one side of her neck.
“Not to talk to you . . .”
Now she looked up, saw Karina’s eyes were reddened. She whispered, “To talk to who?”
“Josh,” Karina said.
“Don’t do that—why would you do that to me?”
“To you? You know what it’s done to me? How do you think my week has been?”
“I’m sorry . . .”
“I cant sleep, I can’t think about anything else . . . it’s like this heavy lump in my stomach,” she said, holding a fist above her navel. “Every time I get quiet, the thought of it just jumps out at me and gets me all . . . twisted.”
“Would you really have told Josh?”
“No,” she said. “It’s on my back, you know?—wanting to do the right thing.”
“That’s the right thing?”
Karina looked at her pleadingly. “Isn’t it?”
A straggler from the yoga class came in the change room, went to her locker a half dozen down from theirs so they stopped talking till she’d headed to the shower.
Karina said, “I’d rather not know at all. It’s the burden that’s so hard, knowing a secret, knowing how you’d break Josh’s heart. Devin Stone? I mean, come on.”
“You don’t have to worry.”
“Why?”
“He knows. Josh knows.”
“He knows?” Her voice was a fearful high-pitch.
“I told him,” she said.
Karina couldn’t believe it, nodding forward. “You did?”
“He’s not stupid. I’m a terrible liar. It’s a bad mix.”
“What happened?”
“The way home from the party I told him it was just an argument, me and Devin, and I didn’t want to talk about it. Josh lets me off the hook, but he’s stewing. I did nothing to make him feel any better about it. For days. . . . It leads to a blow out. You know, I actually felt worse about the lying than what happened. The lying is so direct and personal, and I do it looking in his eyes.”
“A blow out? Is he okay?—are you guys okay?”
“You wouldn’t believe it.”
A woman emerged from the shower, passing through in her slapping slides. They both slipped out of their tights, wrapped themselves in towels, grabbed their shower kits. The coast was clear again and Kimmy tossed her kit to the bench, got close to Karina.
“I took him out for a beer the other night. Somewhere public so he wouldn’t lose his shit on me. I told him what happened.”
“You really did?”
She nodded. Karina touched her arm, being supportive. “So I told him what happened.” She shrugged. “He blamed Devin.”
“It was Devin.”
“I know.”
“Was he hurt?”
She shook her head, avoiding Karina’s eyes as she skated around the truth. “He . . .” She looked up at the metal rafters. This part was true. True and astounding. “We . . . couldn’t be better right now.”
“Really?” Karina’s voice trailed up—not disbelief, but a hopeful rising.
“I mean it. We went home from the bar, and we . . . we were with each other all night. Touching, kissing. It was amazing.” A real tear spilled over her lid and she wiped.
“Why didn’t you call me to tell me that?”
“It was just the other night. Tuesday. I knew I’d see you here today. When you didn’t show up on time my heart sunk so low.”
“Come here,” Karina said, smiling. She embraced Kimmy, and Kimmy put her arms around her back. “I’m sorry, Kimmy, I never knew I was such a shitty friend.”
They were in towels and otherwise bare, so they kept it brief, stepping back, adjusting their terry wraps. She said, “It reset us or something. Not what happened at the party reset us, but being honest. Like, I totally forgot how amazing Josh was or, I don’t know . . . not forgot, but . . . took for granted.”
“He loves you so much, Kimmy. Always has.”
“I told him, Karina, told him the truth. And it made us better.”
“You’re so lucky,” Karina said soft and soothingly.
“Are you okay now?”
“I’m okay. That’s the best thing I could hear. I mean it. And I’m sorry I let you down.”
“I let you down. I let myself down. Josh and I . . . we’re going to be okay.”
They showered together, dressed, then Kimmy took Karina to lunch, the weight lifted. Karina was light, relieved, and the thought that Karina could have told Josh what happened—tattled on her—got her squirming while she showed a smile all through their Buddha bowls and green teas smoothies. But it was done, the truth told for the most part, and also crystallized before her via her own words was a new happy love for her husband. She’d danced around just how much she’d actually confessed to Josh, but the real gold nugget in what she’d said to Karina was how even a facet revealed to her sweet Josh had revived them and reminded her how much she shared with the man she’d been with since high school. She didn’t deserve him . . .

Never would have occurred to her to buy lingerie, but here she was filing through the racks at La Vie en Rose. It was an unexpected activity, after lunch with Karina coming out to the RioCan Durham Center to hit the Costco and the Michaels and the Wal-Mart, walking from the Nissan to the Costco, looking up and seeing the high end classy storefront face for the women’s undergarment boutique. She’d thought of Josh. Thought of their sweet time in bed together the other night. Like old times. In college, homework and class the heaviest burden, the sex then had been carefree. They definitely weren’t trying to get pregnant. But even then had they ever been playful? Josh at times would get lusty and they would fool around a little but why had she never tried to dress sexy for him? It’s not like she had terrible underwear, but she’d never presented herself to him like a well-wrapped package his hands would shake while opening and revealing. The idea tickled her.
So now she had some choices to make.

Another dilemma.
The groceries were emptied from the cloth bags, canned goods in the cupboards, dairy in the fridge, produce on the counter where she leaned, looking at the plastic bag that held their re-stocked toiletries. Now she put her hand in the bag, plastic rustling, found the small cardboard lozenge, light as air, heavy with tenor. Withdrew it. Black, gold letters. A three-pack of Trojan Magnum condoms.
When she’d plucked them from the peg, it’d been done with a funny hair toss and complementary chuckle. Grabbed the normal size condoms, saw the Magnums, laughed, plucked, kept walking; all upbeat and cheery. The rationale? Who knows. It was like she’d said to herself in the moment Hey, better safe than sorry. But funny, like she didn’t mean it. But she bought them. Even flinched when they got scanned at the checkout like the guy would be thinking This lady’s got two boyfriends. But she didn’t have two . . .

With the produce sorted, she put away what went in the fridge, fruit in one drawer, veggies in the other, melon on the counter, bananas on their hanger, the remainder laid out to be washed for the garden salad she would make. i could see Devin humoring Kimmy this time by using a condom. In order to do so she’ll have to barter and let it slip she is back on birth control, but isn’t safe yet.. Just sharing a negative experience I had using condoms. The whole condom scene with the follow Trojan product line discussion reminded me of it. Hey, we actually read things. ;) Okay... sometimes a dish does require peeled cukes. I know when I make a salad and use cukes, I scrub them, but that's it. If I'm going to soak them in salty water with a dash of white wine vinegar, I peel them (this stuff REALLY tastes good, but has gassy after effects--don't pig out on them). If you're going to cube them, peel them. Question for everyone: Sliced or cubed cukes for salads? Me, sliced. I scrub potatoes for baking and eat the skin, too. I know some people who don't peel carrots and only scrub them. I wash every raw vegetable or fruit prior to eating. Writing that stuff about the unwashed cuke was fun, though. :) No offense meant. I just go off sometimes. :)

I have had a condom fail while swing with another couple. All of us were in our mid 40s. It happened right at the wrong time as I was passing the point of no return. I actually ran across an article on Huffington Post and here were the sizes length and width in inches : Trojan ENZ (7.62x 2.00) Magnum (8.12 x 2.12) and Magnum XL (8.37x 2), nothing noted about Magnum XXL. So Regular Magnums make more sense to me for Devin as they are the girthiest condoms. XL’s are regular condoms just longer, but really the size difference isn’t much.

I stand corrected! And as far as TED talk material, this would probably qualify. I've see some interesting topics on Ted talk. So the Trojan Magnum XL's are 30% larger than normal condoms didn't see XXL but it's interesting the different shapes, sizes, textures and thinness of latex. The funny thing is, I was curious so I just checked (you can check Wal-Mart's stock online) - they stock the XL in Pickering and Whitby, but not in Ajax! So, you were 100% right, but as far as I'm concerned it would have been completely believable :P. Also, KT: your stories are absolutely never trite, in my eyes. RCH: In Losing His Wife, Jess buys Tyler Magnum XL, and Reza in the Landlord series actually uses Magnum XXL. Especially in a story like this where a big part of the emphasis is on the intimidating physicality and masculine power of the third party. Since it’s been brought up, it actually makes me curious and I’m going to go deep into puerile territory here – KT’s “other men” tend to have similar sized equipment across the spectrum of her books, but there’s still a lot of variance – some are definitely indicated as bigger or smaller than others. Of course, people in real life differ, but, especially in the erotica genre, these details are definite choices on the part of the author. So, I wonder why KT would make some of these choices. It could be that KT is trying to evoke different ideas: For example - In Cherry Blossoms, Nia is already familiar with a number of larger men, so KT creates an exceptionally large man at the far end of the spectrum to create a unique, new experience for Nia. In contrast, Tripp in the Separate Schools series is notably smaller for a KT “other man”, reflecting both his role as more of an emotional threat to the relationship, as well as the series’ overall more romantic/interpersonal focus over erotica. Having said all that, I would imagine that Devin should belong on the very highest end of the scale based on his symbolic role in the story, as brute, bullying chauvinistic masculinity incarnate. It may be my imagination but it seems that the story hasn’t decided on it, yet. The opening scene of the whole series would indicate that Devin is on the high end, but Josh’s later recollections at home start walking back Devin’s size (though this could be Josh’s own wishful thinking). And now in this chapter Kimmy gets the regular magnum while in the past KT has specifically gone XL or higher (Nia also purchased XL). It could be that KT is undecided, or maybe Kimmy is underestimating too. Anyway, I say go big or go home :P! Thank you for attending my dick size TED talk.

Someone mentioned Kimmy and Devin in the bathroom. I had forgot about that! So we have the incident on the "Grassy Knoll". Additionally we have them in the bathroom getting interrupted. Now my understanding of the grassy knoll was he didn't or couldn't gain full entry into Kimmy and there is no mention of Devin releasing in Kimmy. The curious point here is why was Kimmy so worried about pregnancy when she got home? Devin's early morning visit to Josh's tent he did indicate he fucked her twice. I think the story pacing is fine... it took until book 3 in Chelsea hates Libby for Fin and Libby to have sex, and that is my favorite series by KT... This one might be #2. The only issue is waiting a week or however long for the next chapter cause it’s so good, but that is what it is, even if we got more I’d still want more.

this is certainly a way for the story to go.. and would be the “good guys win” ending, personally that isn’t what I hope happens I’m more “villains win” person. I’d be cool eventually with Karina and Josh getting together, but only after Kimmy includes her in a threesome with Devin. As for Kimmy’s ending she’s a lawyer, young and attractive, whatever happens me thinks she’ll land on her feet. Maybe she’ll meet a guy who has the good qualities of both Devin and Josh.

You’ve eliminated all my nits... on another topic what other scenes besides the corruption of Karina are you having premonitions about? here are a couple I’m hoping for 1) Threesome arc with Amy (if Amy is the devil, we need to know how much of an monster she is in the sack 2) Once Kimmy is back on BC I’m hoping for Devin giving her a creamer pie and Josh unknowingly eating it. 3) A bunch of humiliating sex acts for both Kimmy and Josh (kimmy blowing Devin when Josh is in the room. Another could be Devin schedules a out of town “business meeting” that requires Kimmy to be there on Josh and Kimmy’s anniversary. Josh calls Kimmy and while they are talking Devin and Kimmy are messing around. Kimmy can’t take it any more so she ends the call and Devin gets her to admit she’d rather be with him on this night than her husband.

Like he says to Kimmy at the end of book one, he's not trying to get Kimmy to run away with him, he just wants to fuck. He's just taking what he wants. In some ways that's worse. In his lizard male dominance brain, he's showing his sexual power when he can take sexual satisfaction with Kimmy without even the pretense of being an emotionally supportive partner to her.

I think your analysis is spot on with what has been provided in the story so far. If I’m picking nits, the only thing I’m not sure on is Devin treating the marriage as a joke.. I’m not sure Devin is motivated to end the relationship or if he just wants to live a high school fantasy of fucking Kimmy, while getting to relive a high school past time of fucking with Josh. the destruction of the marriage might be his intention, but just an unintended consequence.

Gonna get a little analytical here. Some thoughts about why this cheating dynamic is compelling with an antagonistic “bully” figure. There’s a comforting narrative that someone like Josh can tell themselves, that despite all the bullying he had to put up with in high school, despite all the material success and sexual conquests a guy like Devin might have, Devin can’t touch what Josh has with Kimmy, and perhaps can’t match Josh’s success in emotional relationships. Josh is the empathetic, supportive guy, that respects Kimmy’s ideals and beliefs, in direct opposition to the brute masculine power Devin represents, and our cultural stories say that means Josh wins love in the end. Kimmy, for her part, knows any attraction she has to Devin is shallow and animal, and every rational thought tells her to reject it. A loving relationship like this is Josh’s refuge, it’s safe from the shallow power dynamics of his past experiences. That makes Devin’s prospective dominance over Kimmy not just a defeat of Josh as a husband and man but a total refutation of Josh’s values and identity. For Josh, this makes it especially scary and potentially humiliating if Devin can, in fact, easily have Kimmy whenever he wanted. What makes it worse is Devin treating Josh and Kimmy’s marriage like a joke (as Kimmy notes in chapter 5). Deadly serious stakes for Kimmy and Josh essentially amounts to a sexual power game for Devin. Their marriage is his sex toy.

This is really a good chapter…so many more reveals to whet the appetite (and solve previous puzzles). I’ve decided to tempt fate and make a prediction and maybe perturb KT’s brain waves…going out on a limb that will probably break or be cut off by one of you. We are at Thursday so Tuesday is 5 days away—the day of the big willy aka substitute cucumber (at least she used a condom before serving it…better than Portnoy at least) (well, I can’t resist, when the Sears Tower in Chicago became the Willis Tower locals began to call it the ‘big willy’, a size of steel that would even make Devin shrink!). Eventually (insert more hot sex and Josh angst here..see previous comments by others) the big Blow Up…by Josh. Exit Kimmy, stage left. Now with my Captain Marvel character reader I know that Josh and Karina are kindred souls (Kimmy has effectively planted a time bomb in her relationship with her friend by playing her as she played Josh.). So my prediction is that after the tidal waves of emotion stop sloshing back and forth, Josh and Karina will find each other and solace (or something else) leaving Kimmy to pursue her ‘big cucumber’ only to discover that cucumbers have a sell by date (envision a really squishy cucumber).

I hate sounding like a broken record, KT, you are so fucking cool! This all feels so true to life, save maybe the cucumber dismemberment, although it is a thing people do, it felt like a bit of fantasy play (nothing wrong with that). I just love how real this story is progressing, including how Kimmy is thinking and her actions, etc.. Who her friends are, who they are to Kimmy, what she does with her time, her thoughts lingerie shopping and why it matters to her (at least what she thinks matters to her), all that stuff is gripping reading. Again I want to say I really love Kimmy's struggles, including ruining her lingerie haul for herself because of what she did to that cucumber. Particularly liking how Kimmy likes to keep Karina at bay with what she wants to reveal as the truth, does she have that kind of restraint with Amy (i.e. the devil on her shoulder)? Me thinks a part of Kimmy wants to keep her possibilities to cheat open ... that and the magnum condoms ... oh and the choosing a vegetable which more closely approximates Devin, also reliving the experience with him ... yeah, that all helps make her intentions clear, too ... I'm such a sucker for the female pov parts of KT stories. Hopefully she hides those magnum condoms from Joshy! In my mind, this explains why Devin says to Josh in chapter one he'd be going "round three" if there weren't so many people around. "Round one" was on the grass and "round two" was the bathroom (even if he's exaggerating how far they got).

I got some premonitions from Kimmy’s talk with Karina, and especially the mention of Karina’s new relationship. I think I mentioned this idea a while back, but I’m doubling down: many books from now, I could see fully corrupted Kimmy getting Karina to stray from her new man with her and Devin. It would show a full turn to the dark side that's been teased for her, and follow through on the devil motif of the series for her to corrupt her own self-described angel.

Whatever Kimmy’d like to tell herself this isn’t close to over. She’ll be wearing that lingerie for Devin. FORESHADOWING. Wow, we're starting to get a clearer picture of how the events of the reunion unfurled. By the sound of it Amy has taken it upon herself to corrupt Kimmy with Devin's help. At this point I don't know if Kimmy is going to need additional influence from Amy. Kimmy seems to be developing a split personality the good and the bad Kimmy. Another excellent chapter KT. You need to put a disclaimer at the head of this chapter warning readers that a cucumber was brutally raped and murdered.
