RCH

Wow, Glaucon a good deal of insight into Devlin! I didn't process the VP position. That means Daddy is possibly still around. Is it possible that Devlin is in deep sh^t with Daddy over the shipment in customs? Maybe there is a weak spot there? Is Devlin possibly the boss Fu%kup son? We'll have to see. Very few businesses do better with the second generation. Because the kids don't have the same hunger as the first generation.

Glaucon

Also he's not the boss of the company, he's a "VP" and the owner's son.

Glaucon

Also, his talk about Kimmy being the whole package is such an obvious "line"

Glaucon

See, it feels to me like projection to talk about Devlin having romantic feelings for Kimmy here. I'll briefly reference Devlin himself saying he doesn't want to run away with her, her just wants to fuck, but we all know he's a liar who'll say what he needs to to get what he wants so I'll set that aside for now. To me, there doesn't seem to me to be anything to base romantic feelings on. Devlin isn't paying for shit, the company pays Kimmy, and pays her some other guy's salary that Devlin fired, at that. so it's not even more expensive than before, Devlin just has a pet unfaithful wife of his old tormenting victim. As for time investment, Kimmy makes a point about how little time Devlin has been spending with her. I don't see any indication this is anything more than an especially hot fling for him, possibly magnified by the fact that he can have it over Josh too.

Glaucon

DnD: that's touching on what I was getting at about strength being an amorphous idea - people talk about Devlin being "strong" but it's super easy to boss people around and act entitled when you have all the money and status in the situation. How "strong" is that really?

DavidnDaria

I suppose the real question about Devlin is this: Does KT make him a more complex character? Right now, I see him as an asshat, with all his posturing--almost a stereotypical, silver spoon bearing, self-absorbed idiot. But that's just me. :) This just brought up a really cool thought (at least I think it is): Devlin, given the way he was raised, might be far less capable of handling adversity than are Josh, or Kimmy. He hasn't had to work for shit.

Chinookfan72

exactly right now it’s low stakes stuff, I’d imagine when the stakes get raised so will the angst.

Chinookfan72

I think it’s just different interpretations of Devlin’s words and actions. We’ve gotten no internal monologue from Devlin so we have no idea what parts of what he is saying and doing is bullshit and what is honest. I think it’s more unlikely someone is going to invest a month of their time and spend thousands of dollars training and hiring lawyers just so he can get a power rush. He’s the boss of a company I can’t imagine he’s got that much free time on his hands to invest in Kimmy if she was just some conquest, and there has to be cheaper and faster avenues available to Devlin to give him his fix. As Josh theorized regarding the card, perhaps Kimmy is the target and not him. Perhaps Devlin fucking with Josh is just a cherry on top of his plan to break up Josh and Kimmy.. Perhaps that’s why he treats their marriage as a joke, because he ends on ending it. Maybe seeing Kimmy at the reunion rekindled his previous feelings and he puts this plan in place to finally get Kimmy. He decides he’s going to tell Josh all the details because regardless of what a Josh does with those details it puts Devlin in a better position to win Kimmy, or it blows up early and he hasn’t wanted much time and effort. I’m not saying this is for sure going to happen, or even it’s 50/50, but I wouldn’t be shocked if this is the route KT chose to go. I also wouldn’t trust any of Kimmy’s and Josh’s inner monologues as a basis of fact. The only people they are lying to more than each other is themselves.

Tim ziegler

If Devlin telling the truth he told Kimmy he doesn’t want to date, and not trying to steal her away from Josh, just work and sex.Maybe the reason the angst is low is because where hashing out on here.

Donkatsu

Good points, Glaucon, but Kimmy usually does not spend tooooo much time agonizing over her choices with Devlin.

Glaucon

All of Devlin's other bullshit is pretty obvious pickup artist patter, and Kimmy knows it, thinking to herself as much multiple times.

Glaucon

Man I dunno, we might be reading completely different stories. Seems to me that it's a huge leap to say that Devlin has feelings for Kimmy. It feels to me like it's mostly a game for him, an ego-stroking demonstration of his power, and a way to make himself feel big at the expense of others. Devlin treats Kimmy's marriage like a joke, while Kimmy agonizes over everything and feels pain for what she's doing. There's a power to that aspect of things too, what for Josh is a possibly marriage destroying act or series of acts, for Devlin is just a lark.

Chinookfan72

no problem, yes I’m constantly going back and reading sections to make sure I have context right.. However every time KT brings up Amy, Kimmy and Devlin my mind just goes to the part of the story where it was revealed Kimmy at least watched Amy and Devlin have sex. I totally missed any connection that Kimmy’s “chance” might have been something more than just a hook up. For some reason until it was revealed in the last couple chapters I thought Josh and Kimmy dated in high school, so perhaps that’s why I never put 2 and 2 together. Ultimately I agree Devlin has some feelings for Kimmy, I mean she’s damn near the total package. Also KT doesn’t seem to be a writer that likes completely good and completely evil characters, everyone is their own shade of grey. Thus Devlin’s only motivation can’t be to fuck with Josh. Maybe it’s to get back at Kimmy for breaking his heart in high school too. Perhaps he never got over Kimmy and getting to fuck with Josh is just icing on the cake. Regardless at some point the emotional connection has to increase between Devlin and Kimmy as I think it naturally would.

DavidnDaria

I didn't mean for you to re-read... I re-read. There probably was something there in high school. Devlin has seen Josh as someone to bully since both were kids, there's no reason to believe he can't get jealous, too. People do some crazy things and that's why KT's books are so good... KT knows the flow of human nature and it comes through big time in books like this one.

JamesIsAsleep

I was thinking this too, regarding two separate but almost parallel goals with Devlin. Both are reluctant to admit it to themselves, too.

RCH

Yes, re-read it is the one downside of getting the story in multi parts. Thank you for the clarification. DnD you saved me from having to re-read at the moment. I still am wondering if there isn't something there, Devlin and his motivations. It's not just the fun of the hunt for him it something else. It could be that he is that big of a douche bag that he just wants Kimmy to "F" with Josh. That would make him a very pathetic of a character. KT usually have some redeeming qualities in her characters Reza is an example of a scoundrel that is trying to help while getting a piece of the action too. Good guy no but not a complete devil ether. We'll have to see how Devlin turns out.

TF

Another good one! Two comments: I am impressed at how seamlessly KT manages two points of view of a single sexual encounter without repetition and no sense of discontinuity. Second, I have a feeling now (just that) Josh and Kimmy are actually moving along different tracks but in the same direction. Josh is all charged up by the thoughts of Devlin fucking Kimmy and Kimmy is all charged up by the thoughts of Devlin fucking Kimmy. Further, both have their embarrassing secrets that they actively hide from the other. When each becomes aware of the other’s secrets, the resultant clash will either blow them apart or make their existing bond stronger. I’m cheering for the latter.

Chinookfan72

i’d love to get some insight into what’s a Devlin’s motivations are. I’d have to say a least on some level he has feelings for a Kimmy. I don’t think he’d do this all just to fuck with a Josh and I do think he recognizes that Kimmy was wasting her law talents prior to him showing up. That being said, because we lack the insight into Devlin’s motivations it makes it impossible to know where he’s coming from. I’d imagine he’ll have a chance to prove it one way or another sometime in the future, until then he remains a mastery. RCH, I think I understand what you are meaning now about Devlin and a Kimmy in high school.. It took me awhile, but now I see you are wondering if a kimmy turned him down or something in high school, like she had the chance to date him and said no...That would be an interesting nugget if true, and as far as I can tell it very well could have.

DavidnDaria

Maybe he does have real feelings for Kimmy and maybe that's why he hasn't harassed Josh since the call that led to finding the card--he doesn't want to piss off Kimmy. I thought the bullying went way back to grade school before Kimmy was even in the picture. Time to re-read.

Chinookfan72

I think the lack of angst had to do with us being relatively early in the story. There is a lack of emotional attachment to Kimmy and Devlin that make their coupling less threatening, and there has been no interaction between Josh and Devlin for two books now. I’d imagine both of these things will change once Kimmy and Devlin start going at it for reals, but right now the stage is still being set for the chess game to begin. I’d think getting small chunks of the story would increase angst not decrease it because we are almost always left with more questions than answers after each chapter.

RCH

Chinookfan72, yes I remember that and one could read that it was more that a one time thing potentially. I maybe reading in something that is not there.

RCH

We'll what I am really reacting to is Amy dialog combined with Devlin's insistence on getting Kimmy to a hotel room to do her right! I'm just wondering that maybe as I said above that perhaps Devlin has feelings for Kimmy beyond the physical. I was just wondering if he may have bullied Josh because he got the girl? Poor Devlin is not appreciated as having any feelings he is just treated as a "BIG DICK" by all the girls... boo, hoo...

JamesIsAsleep

I feel like this is just a, "give it time" thing regarding angst. That said, it feels like we've been waiting a long time for angst to hit with the might that KT has done in the past ... I think it's the piecemeal release that you mentioned having an effect, I had a totally new level of clarity and love of this story when it was released in a full book format. I dont know what the disconnect is for me in reading in this piecemeal format (though I have my thoughts), but i still prefer the complete story to this style. That said, seeing that red number on the top right corner of the patreon app icon is a drug.

DavidnDaria

You know, you're both right. It is different territory, though Six Weeks has that potential, too. I mean, Janey is cheating with Maceo (c'mon!). It's an interesting thing, but Kimmy keeps thinking one and done. Yeah, it's really cheating, but what if she really has the inner strength to shut Devlin down after just one time?

DavidnDaria

What I did ensured I got it. Right now I doubt Josh really wants the truth. He wants the turn on of not knowing, yet doesn't want it at the same time. It makes him sick, but it turns him on incredibly. He may well be cuckold. If Kimmy does as she's convinced herself she's going to do, he may well end up an unaware cuckold for a while until it slaps him in the face. I don't know if KT is going to go there or not. That's why I wrote about one-and-done for a while. In the one-and-done scenario, as I see it, Kimmy leaves Devlin's employment for another, more lucrative position in law. She eventually faces her old company in court, wins, and then she and Devlin explode. It ain't gonna happen now that it's out in the universe, but it's entirely in character as of now.

RCH

Glaucon, it's feels less angsty because Josh keeps getting defused. He is getting reassured by Kimmy and it's not a deception she truly loves him and whats him. She needs and wants Josh in her life. She is just looking to get some strange. Is she going to be able to keep things simple with Devlin? Is she going to get attached to Devlin? Or possibly is Devlin going to get attached to her? He keeps holding off he wants to do her right the first time. Why's he care so much if it's just pussy for him? Now what is going to happen down the road is as you say, is up to KT. I have to agree that this is somewhat different territory for KT but it's great!

Glaucon

It's interesting, so far it feels less angsty than Maggie or the LHW, or even parts of Happy Endings - although to be fair it feels like we're still in the set-up stages! It may also be that this hits me different when I read it piecemeal like this. Another aspect might be that the long form cheating story is somewhat newer territory for KT, so still playing around with perspectives and dynamics.

Chinookfan72

there was reference to at least one incident in high school that included Amy, Devlin and Kimmy... Sounds like Kimmy didn’t join in, but could have.

RCH

Another one knocked out of the ball park! KT great inner dialog! We're getting a better handle on our couple. Interesting Kimmy's replay of Amy's comments! "Amy saying, Aw, poor Kimmy, you had your chance and now look what you’re stuck with." What chance? Is this in reference to something that happened in HS? I though the incidences at the reunion happened after Kimmy and Amy put drunken Josh to bed? So, we still have more history that is to be revealed! Is it possible that Devlin has been pining Kimmy since HS? Is this the source of Devlin's bullying of Josh? Hum...

KT Morrison

Got it thanks! I swore i checked that, but still somehow to get them switched. I'm sticking with Western for law, and I made the change to the first ebook. Thank you!

Donkatsu

Yep, the previous comment, where autocorrect invented the word "quantize" should have read: Wow! what a hot chapter. Way better than some stupid Covid-19 quarantine. On the copy editing front: "It had to be now; he ran a finger under the crescent hem of her panties, down where they thinned between her legs, found the slickness against the back of his finger w[h]ere she was a woman"

Donkatsu

"quantize" what's that? => "quarantine"

Donkatsu

Wow! what a chapter! Way better than some stupid Covid-19 quantize. . . Joining the copy editing brigade: "It had to be now; he ran a finger under the crescent hem of her panties, down where they thinned between her legs, found the slickness against the back of his finger w[h]ere she was a woman."

Glaucon

KT, just FYI in case it got swallowed up by other comments and missed, you've swapped where Kimmy went to law school - in book 1 (chapter 7) you have Kimmy saying she went to law school at Queens and undergrad at Western, and here you've got the reverse.

Chinookfan72

I enjoyed this chapter a lot.. The inner monologues of both Kimmy and Josh sound like drug addicts. DND & RCH, continuing our conversation from the last chapter.. I agree with both of your last comments.. The fact that this is Josh’s first, and only serious relationship makes it even harder. I highly doubt he has much experience at all with women outside of Kimmy so the fear of losing the only girl you’ve ever had ratchets up the fear another level. DND, as you said in your experience you didn’t confront your significant other until you knew she couldn’t lie.. I would expect Josh to do the same, and right now Josh lacks any evidence that would prevent Kimmy from being able to fib her way out of his line of questioning. This was what I was trying to say in previous comments but couldn’t do it as eloquently as you did. Now this doesn’t mean he can’t go the Tommy route in Happy Endings, but I don’t think Josh wants to admit to himself yet that he’s into his wife sleeping around.

DavidnDaria

Kimmy is certainly playing with fire. Rationalizing. Just like the kid who says, "Well, Johnny did it! Why can't I" Make it okay in your mind and you don't feel. You don't realize.... until you do. Maybe she'll ask for permission... next time.

JamesIsAsleep

I enjoyed reading this ... I do love Kimmy's frequent mantra ... "Everybody messes arounds" *puts hands over ears "lalala!"

DavidnDaria

Anger sex, hate sex, whatever you want to call it. Rationalizing. Just once. Just one time, and everything will be okay. Life will go on. Or will it? It won't? If it does, it will be a first. KT, will you make it a first? One year? Two years? Three, then boom? Just when Josh and Kimmy have everything they've dreamt of: A beautiful house, nice cars, and to top it off, daddy's little girl, bouncing on Josh's knee giggling, laughing so hard, she snorts, "Daddy!" It happens again. Then again, and again. Kimmy sulks to the laundry room. She needs to change.

JamesIsAsleep

This was fantastic. Josh is getting smarter, but his fantasies are preventing him from stepping in to put a stop to what he suspects of Kimmy. I really love both perspectives in this part, it's a wonderful contrast. Really well done.
