Devil In The Waters, Book 6, Chapter 8 (part 1)

She waited till Josh was out of sight, then waited some more before she turned to look at Devlin, out in the water doing a slow breaststroke returning to shore. He watched her blankly. She set down her drink, stood, went to rinse the sand from her feet and rubber sandals, and Devlin stayed out in the water, standing up now and pushing back his wet hair. They said nothing, and she didn’t smile. There was a fear in her that Josh would double back to spy what she would do in his absence.
Devlin had played his part. He hadn’t fucked it up. Devlin got off on this.
She scanned the bushes around the trail, then looked back to Devlin in the water. “I’m going to go in and talk to him,” she said, not raising her voice.
Devlin nodded, then pushed backwards to float on his back, his chest and stomach muscles shimmering wetly in the Caribbean sun. That sight of him was like an unexpected punch in her stomach. There was something about him that turned her on so much.
Now she began to stroll the trail, following Josh back to the villa, arms folded, her posture slumping in a mock timidity. Josh wasn’t at the pool, wasn’t on the villa patio, and she went through the sliding glass door, closing it behind her, her skin prickling from the cold of the air conditioning. “Josh?”
There was no sound for a moment, and she wondered just how far away he’d run. But then from the kitchen: “In here.”
She found him standing in the kitchenette, arms folded like her, butt against the counter edge and staring at the floor. His expression was surly. When she approached him, he looked up. “Sorry,” he said. “Go back swimming. I just need a minute.”
“Tell me what you’re thinking.”
“What I’m . . . What do you think I’m thinking?”
“I don’t know, Josh,” she said, “that’s why I asked you to tell me.”
He shrugged and looked away. “I don’t know what I’m thinking. I’d tell you if I did.”
“Are you mad at me?”
He shook his head, scoffed and made an exasperated sound. “So, you like playing games, Kimmy, and there: we just got played.”
“We got played?”
He looked up. “You don’t think so?”
Don’t be so weak, Josh. She said, “If you think you just got played, why are you in here?”
“Because of what happened.”
“Him playing you?”
“Kimmy, the guy’s your fucking boss, and he just took his pants off and showed you his dick. What the fuck am I supposed to think? What the fuck am I supposed to do about it?”
“Don’t be mad.”
His voice was still raised. “I’m not mad, Kimmy. I’m just . . . How come you can’t see this my way?”
“Josh, don’t be cross with me. Don’t raise your voice to me. I’m trying to see it your way. . . . Whatever happened to us being in this together?”
“Devlin took his swim trunks off and you looked. That’s what happened.”
“So you are mad at me?”
“Just forget it.”
“Don’t be like that, Josh. I’m not kidding.” Her serious tone got him looking her way. “You can bring this torment on yourself. It’s in your control. When I said we were in this together, that’s what I meant. He has no control over you, Josh. None.”
“I think he does.”
“Hey,” she said, and got closer. Josh wasn’t going to blow up. He didn’t even know who he was mad at. She touched his forearm, then stroked down to circle her fingers around his wrist. “Hey, I’m serious. He doesn’t control you anymore.”
“Why did you look?” His eyes raised to hers, clear and quivering.
“I figured you wanted me to.”
She moved her hand away, but he took it and held it, wouldn’t let her go.
“I thought this would be fun,” she said. “I was doing this for you.”
His expression showed shame. “How can this be for me?”
And though she didn’t the question was directed at her, she answered. “I don’t care, Josh. Want my psychoanalysis? I’m probably wrong. . . . All I know is that you’ve been a bundle of nerves since I started working for him, and the only thing that’s made you anything close to the Josh I love is when you’re opening up to me. All I ever wanted was to make that Josh happy. To get closer to that Josh.”
His lips puckered as he chewed the corner of the inside of his mouth, nodding. “I’m not mad at you,” he said at last. “I don’t know who I’m mad at.”
“You don’t have to be mad at anybody.”
“Kimmy, you have to go back to work on Monday with him. And he just showed you his dick.” He held her eyes steadfastly.
She said, “So what? It’s nothing I didn’t know about already.”
He hung his head, defeated, deflated. “But you saw it. You . . . did you mean you’ve seen it before?”
“No,” she said, deflecting.
“Amy?”
She frowned. “Amy what?”
“What did she tell you?”
“Tell me? About . . . that? Everybody knows. Yeah, Amy talked about Devlin in that way. But so do you.”
He shook his head. “Well, now you saw it.”
“Now I saw it.” She waited to see what he would say.
Josh raised his chin to look at her again. “I don’t know how to feel about that.”
She slumped, leaned her almost naked body against his. Her nipples had hardened from the air conditioning’s chill, and she let the bulb of one nipple press against his arm. “Think that’s what I do?”
“You know it. You said it to me. I think you might be right.”
“What’s a man supposed to do in a situation like this? I don’t even know. Go down tell him to get out? That’s what I should do. That’s what I feel like I should do. But, I feel like I should go down there and knock him out.”
“How would you do that?”
“You don’t think I could?”
“If that’s what you think you should do . . .”
“You don’t think that’s what I should do?”
“Not when I went to great trouble to get this to happen. Get it to happen for you. I didn’t do this so you could punch him.”
He groaned and his head rocked back while his eyes closed.
She said, “Did you forget that part? How do you think I feel wearing this in front of Devlin?” She plucked at the strap of her bikini top. “You think I like walking around in front of my boss like this? I know I have to go see him on Monday. Now he knows what I look like half naked. I did that for you, and you’re letting it . . . You’re wasting it.”
“Wasting it?”

“Is that an insult?”

“I like it when you stand up to Devlin,” she said, slinking against him.
“You like that?”
“I already told you.” She scratched the point of his chin with her index finger. “Just remember he’s my boss. Don’t take this too far. I’m your wife. You’re my husband. You’re up here saying we got played. Devlin doesn’t even know this is a game. Our game.”
“What do you want me to do?”
“Show him you’re not afraid, Josh. The Josh I love isn’t a coward.”
“You want me to go and punch him?”
“How do you think that will go, Josh?”

She tried not to humiliate him, keeping her features relaxed. “Do you? And then I’m out of a job too, by the way.”
“We’ll sue him for wrongful dismissal. He took his pants off in front of you.”
“As much as you’d like to, do you really think that’s fair?”
“Why?”
“If we go to court, we have to lie?”

Daria checked it the other day. I checked it last night and found the filter had changed. Go figure. Had nothing to do with notifications that I saw. No biggie, though. Yeah, it's getting chilly here at night, now. Frost warnings. It's funny, we went to Frankenmuth for a weekend at the end of September and it was beautiful (we actually ate at three restaurants while we were there--first time since COVID). Monday came... cold.
