She’d texted at seven-thirty she was on the road again and would be home soon. At five after eight she came home and right away he knew something was wrong.
Now he stood at the kitchen pass-through, watching his wife’s back as she washed her hands in the sink and then poured herself a glass of water and drank.
He asked her what’s going on, unable to hide the nervousness from his voice. The way she’d come in the door, that terrible look on her face . . . Something had happened, and he feared she’d lost her job. The job with Devlin had changed her for the better, and the extra money made them secure.
Kimmy held up a finger, finished her drink, then sat the glass in the bottom of the sink. She bowed her head and her posture slumped. The sight of her this way sunk his heart.
He hustled around the pass-through and into the kitchen to join her. “What is it, what happened?” He turned her to face him and when she looked down, avoiding his eyes, he put his arms around her. Kimmy melted against him. “Tell me,” he whispered, brow furrowed, knot in his stomach, his hands stroking her back.
Kimmy pulled back like she would tell him, then lost her nerve, shaking her head and staring at his chest.
“Is everything okay?” He just wanted to hear that she was all right, that she was still employed, or that her family were all okay. Did she witness an accident on the drive home?
“I did what I said I would do,” she said, voice quiet but with an urgent despair.
“What are you talking about? Did what?”
Now Kimmy’s eyes raised to meet his, and though their gazes met, there was no connection, his wife’s eyes lost somewhere, giving him no indication where her mind was. Her mouth remained open, like she would begin speaking as soon as the words became unstuck from her throat.
“Hey,” he said, almost chuckling now, realizing the benevolent power he held over her: Kimmy couldn’t disappoint him, there was nothing she could have done that would break him. Whatever was wrong could be solved, could be made right. “You’re here, you’re home, everything is okay. Whatever it is we can figure it out. Your family is all right? It’s not—”
“They’re fine, Josh, everyone’s fine,” she said in a normal tone at last, his worry for her family snapping Kimmy out of it and showing her the terribleness of what Josh might assume bothered her—and how he was here to support her in anything.
The relief hearing her voice return and seeing a human glimmer in her eyes was huge. He chuckled and hugged her again, and as he did, his brain caught up with her words and the situation.
I did what I said I would do.
“What did you do?”
He held her away with his hands on curve of her shoulders. He saw fear from her now and realized his features had furrowed to a scowl. His features eased, and he showed her compassion and understanding instead.
Kimmy’s mouth worked to speak again and he lowered his gaze to meet hers. She found the words.
“What I said I would do.”
Josh’s mind went straight to the gutter and he hated himself for it. She brought up Devlin’s nakedness at work like she told him she would. She’d said something and the situation went the wrong way. Oh shit— it went bad and they ended up having sex.

"Nothing happened though, right?"
Kimmy's sober expression changed to comical annoyance for a second. A peek behind her mask that made him think again she manipulated him, and enjoyed doing it.

"Press play," he said.

I love this story, hate Kimmy, but then that is KT’s gift - developing characters I love to hate. I am hoping she at least allows Josh to express the anger and pain she inflicted. At least the threat that Josh will show a hint of self worth and leave her. That usually seems to be the missing element. Hoping this one doesn’t get tied with a nice bow. Way too much selfishness and cruelty to see Josh embrace Kimmy.
