Man, all that stuff about the fugue form is going to have to go into a KT book at some point. I'm not a musician so this is such a great analysis for me. It's like I've hit a rich vein filled with analogical ore. Thank you, Donkatsu. I love all of this. Man, I just re-read it again, and I love it, love it, love it. It’s a great analysis and accurate. I didn’t do that intentionally, though I wish I could claim I did. I’ve been editing some of the Maggie chapters and reading it again. When I wrote it I had no idea where it would go. Now that I do, I’m more aware of the character arcs. Some of those were conscious, some came clearer the further into the story we all went. Ultimately, I was thinking just yesterday, Maggie would become Carol and Max would become his dad. Given how his dad made jokes about the Beckers after the Miltons met them for dinner in Manhattan, how likely a pairing would Carol Becker and Max’s dad be? (Picture Lucy Liu at her sternest and a gentile Eugene Levy) Maggie’s almost-fling with Jay Carmichael was the spark of Carol within her. Not getting what she wanted and something within her seeking to rectify it because she is better than everyone else and deserves such things. Then Cole comes in and flings Maggie’s kink doors wide open. Max was doomed the minute Cole called Maggie Margaret. I was re-reading the second Maggie book where they go to RI and tour churches and restaurants, and I totally forgot how fucking smooth Cole was. I can’t believe some of those things he said to her. Fucking hot.

Things we know: 1. Maggie is a gifted classical musician; 2. She is familiar with the Fugue form: a contrapuntal composition in which a short melody or phrase (the subject) is introduced by one part and successively taken up by others and developed by interweaving the parts. Given her conversation with Max in the shower it is easy to imagine that this is indeed a fugue composition: KT has written this kind of thing before, Maggie has read the earlier KT work and incorporates it into her weltanshauung, thereby flavoring both her underlying attitudes toward sexing cock size, as well as her conversations with Max.. This in turn leads Max into a more KT victim/cuckold status, which in turn leads Maggie into a KT Hotwife attitude mode, and so on. This pattern makes further KT works even more attractive to Maggie, which makes her even more likely to become a killer KT-gal, and induces more devious yet submissive behavior in Max. The same themes overlayed one on top of the other. If one of the Farmington bunch were a quantum physicist rather than a philosopher, maybe we could get to the bottom of this. But in such absence I will have to plow on. Happy New Year everyone.
