DITW 13-1: Thoughts They Cannot Defend

There might be more he wanted to say, but she could read in his eyes he wouldn’t say it in front of Devlin. Because begging her for more truth would make him weak. It would show Devlin his most vulnerable emotions. He wouldn’t say it here, but he would say it when they were home. She needed him aroused. Needed him entangled. When they went home, they would never talk about what happened in this hotel room ever again. Josh wouldn’t ever bring it up.

To answer your question, CSH, the answer logically would be "no", they are both similarly wrong and awful for Josh. BUT. Kimmy has said multiple times she thinks only she should be allowed certain things in relation to demeaning or humiliating Josh because she "knows best" and loves him so has his best interests (ha!) at heart. This typically is followed up with why she dislikes Devlin and the crap he pulls in relation to Josh and that Devlin can't be trusted with Josh and how fragile he is. So it will be interesting to see how Kimmy takes this. Disappointed in Josh? Angry at Devlin for potentially ruining her moment? Both?

Gravity's Rainbow is like that but Pynchon admitted he didn't understand a lot of the tech an chemical stuff he put in it.. fudged it, also I saw one of those companion books on kindle. It's like Joyce's Ulysses you're not gonna understand every thing. But most of Pynchon's books especially his later ones are easier than that. But the truth is GR is a cornucopia of laughs, sex, violence and just about every genre you can shake a stick at. If you want genuine historical science fiction that is educational, entertaining, erudite and brilliantly written then I loved and painlessly learned a lot from and was impressed by as literature there is Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle in three volumes Quicksilver, The Confusion and The System of the World, it transcends genre but is the most rigorous piece of genuine science fiction I have read, with a judicious sprinkling of fantasy. And as I said to KT The Crying of Lot 49 at a mere 189 and almost no science is Pynchon light.

Well, it's kinda the same book, but I had to break it up. I haven't published anything in months and we're still not through the end yet. There's a lot of ground to cover still, and I'd hate to feel the rush to finish it just for the sake of getting it published. It'll give me breathing room and also let me expand on the ending the way I'd like. As for the next chapter, I have a few uploaded and scheduled, but they're set to publish on Mon, Tues, Thrs, Fri. I must be one of a minority who have read Gravity's Rainbow, as you know I love long books... I've read it about four times, parts of it are heavy going. The first time I read it took me two days to get through about 50 pages consulting dictionaries to find out what words like preterite meant until I realized if I ignored the dictionary I knew what it meant. I persevered because I had read The Crying of Lot 49 a novella by Pynchon that led me into his paranoid universe, where an anarchist postal service with the symbol of a muted post horn reach back through history, I spent several weeks making Management and some staff at our school twitchy with signs and symbols on notice boards W.A.S.T.E. drawings of muted post horns, We Await Silent Tristero's Empire. It's only 189 pages long, its main character is Oedipa Mas and it's great. It starts with her getting anonymous phone calls. Gravity's Rainbow's is set in WWII and a comic labyrinth of hot sex, drugs, violence, a secret service agency that employs supernatural methods and its main characters are dissolute AWOL service men who travel war zones but most of all it's about V2 rockets and a hot blonde nazi soldier who is fated to re-enact Hanzel and Gretel by kinky nazi scientists... you'll probably always be too busy to read it... But if you haven't read it already I sincerely recommend The Crying of Lot 49 as Pynchon's shortest novel.

L_S87, I just reread that chapter, and I see what you were saying. I had forgotten about that. Josh thought that Kimmy was the only one who knew how obsessed he was about the panties. Before the last couple chapters, I would have said no way did Kimmy have anything to do with those texts. Now, I wonder. Kimmy is seeming more and more unredeemable to me. She’s realizing truths about herself, as well. She acknowledges how much she loves dominating and humiliating Josh. We’ll just have to wait and see how she reacts to Devlin’s awful surprise.

Kat: it wasn't actually in that chapter. It was a few after that when Josh was heading home. He was livid and contemplating how evil and awful Kimmy was to do this to him and during those thoughts he noted that Devlin was shocked to see the panties. Josh himself stated he thought that meant those texts never came from Devlin, but from someone else. Josh surmised it was Kimmy betraying him yet again. From Kimmy's POV, it was never discussed but given her abhorrence for Devlin at the time, seemed 99.99% unlikely she would partner with Devlin to do something so horrific. That lead me to belive the likely culprit was Amy, since that sort of demeaning action is right up her alley. Unfortunately, as you noted, its a part of the story that sort of got dropped and ignored, but it plays prime importance to me simply because it sets the stage for why Josh would be so unlikely to wear the panties again at Devlin's behest. Hopefully KT has a good reason cooked up for us beyond, he just did it because it adds spice to the story. I have faith, she's good at catching these things and making them work. Just feels off the way it's currently portrayed.

In Chapter 8, Kimmy asked him if he had been with Devlin the night before. Josh said to her, “I wouldn’t go to Devlin for the antidote to any poison. The first time Josh was forced to wear panties when he went to Devlin's because he wanted (needed) to see the rest of that picture of Kimmy. One of the requirements he was texted (from an unknown number) was to wear panties when he went to meet Devlin. When Josh showed him the proof that he was wearing them so Devlin would stop taunting him and just get the showing over with, Devlin was momentarily shocked at what Josh was wearing. The implication being that Devlin never sent the texts because he clearly didn't expect Josh to be wearing them. Given how mean and evil Amy is, and her penchant for hurting and demeaning Josh, I figured the obvious choice of texter was Amy. My point here is there's no such coercion going on. Devlin (or Amy) has nothing to hold over his head to force him to wear them, and while he might enjoy jerking off in them, wearing them was clearly never his thing. Which is why I say it feels forced. It's a way for Devlin to belittle Josh in front of Kimmy and reduce his value to her, but it doesn't really work (imo) because Devlin lacks the leverage to make it happen when Josh hates him so clearly and has zero desire to follow his directions, only Kimmy's.

Saying he wanted this all along, Kimmy is pretty much taunting him like a bully just like Devlin. I think he is wearing the panties as a condition to get Devlin in the room. I'll be honest, the end of this chapter kills this a bit for me. I saw it coming several chapters ago because i knew KT wouldn't be able to resist finding a way to shoe horn it in, but for me it doesn't quite fit because the circumstances don't work. The whole panty thing worked when it was a deception by Amy that Devlin didn't know about and it was a stipulation, a requirement for something Josh needed, badly, in that moment. There's no such requirement here. This was going to happen, period, because everyone wanted it. Devlin had nothing to hold over Josh's head to coerce this, and Josh has shown in the past he's not the crossdressing type, nor the type to follow Devlin's whims. He'd do it if Kimmy asked, but not Devlin. It feels like an unneeded stretch to jam this in. That said, the dialogue here was great, and I love all of it. Hate Kimmy's awful manipulation, leaning on Josh's love and weakness to get her way, but she's SO masterful at it. There's almost nothing she couldn't sell Josh to maneuver him to where she wants him. I truly wonder how this ends given how conflicted Josh is.
