That was before the recession. Before the housing market collapsed and Jim's shifts were reduced down to one or two days a week, and his wages reduced. Now almost all his buddies were unemployed, though some had left for other states to find work. Meanwhile his girlfriend had graduated and they got married. With the honeymoon and excitement, there had been little time to think about work. But since things had settled down, Jim had begun to ask for more shifts. His boss had sympathized with him and even thrown him some extra hours, but it wasn't much.
This morning, Jim had no reason to get up early. There was no work today and like many men across the country, he was effectivly unemployed.
