Mikey hadn't thought about the irony of his costume whenever his older brother had picked it out for him; he'd had such concerns that Gary would intentionally pick something humiliating, like a ballerina or a kitty cat, that he'd taken the choice of mummy in stride. He'd honestly thought that he'd been getting off pretty easy, because he really just hadn't conceptualized what the choice of costume would entail.
A mummy, and not just any mummy, but one constructed from the most DIY material possible for such an outfit, which of course was good old-fashioned toilet paper. It carried little cost, and it took little effort overall; some portion of the costume still used gauze bandages, to help keep everything together, but the bulk was the quilted sheets better put on a roll beside the toilet.
It was the consequence of the bet that they'd made, that he had lost; a bet in which the winner got to decide what the loser would wear for Halloween. The parameters of said bet had been focused around whether or not Mikey could make it all the way through the scary movie that he'd begged his brother to allow him to join in on viewing.
Winning would have required him to sit stone-faced throughout its run; there could he no screaming, no whimpering, no covering his eyes with his hands or cowering under his blanket, and no fear-induced accidents.
It had been the sort of bet that was only made to ward Mikey off from sticking around, since it had been Gary and his friend Lucas, who had wanted to watch their spooky flick in peace. It'd only been upon threats to tattle to their parents, that Gary had begrudgingly given an option that would allow his bratty baby brother a spot on the couch.
The video tape had come from Lucas' house, from his own much older brother that was off at college, and it was hardly appropriate for a pair of fifth graders, let alone the third grade tag-along that wouldn't leave them in peace. It had scares, screams, and the sort of bloody violence that left Mikey feeling queasy under his blanket.
The younger boy had not made it even a full thirty minutes into the runtime of the film, before he'd already hit multiple loss conditions; with a pale face, he had already whimpered and whined, pulling his balloon-adorned blanket up to his eyes, and the grand culmination had been the terrifying jump scare that'd left the seat of his pajamas hot and heavy.
In the darkened recreation room of the basement, where the trio lounged on the couch in front of the television, a ripe smell had begun to waft its putrid plumage; a foul mixture of something earthy and toxic, mired in the talcum and Desitin that'd coated his bottom.
That brought things to a head in why his costume had an ironic twist, what with the toilet paper wrapped around his petite form; Mikey wasn't exactly what could be called fully 'pottytrained' yet, and there was no better evidence of that then the bulky around his backside that was hardly concealed by the binding of the bandages.
The boy wasn't incontinent, nor was he daft, but he was both spoiled and stubborn. He knew how to use the toilet, and while his capacity to hold back was stunted in comparison to his peers, it wasn't so poor that he couldn't keep his pants dry or clean with the same success ratio of the average Kindergarten rugrat.
It was purely a matter of choice, and one that their parents had been far too accommodating in allowing. It'd started when they had first tried pottytraining him past his third birthday, and due to his disinterest, their attempts had been lackluster each time they brought the training potty back out.
By the time he had started school, he was still in Pampers full-time, with hardly any concern for how infantile it made him come across as, and with their parents simply shrugging off the underdevelopment of their youngest child. It wasn't until Mikey got teased by his classmates, that he'd done the bare minimum to at least avoid their scorn.
So he wore training pants to school, and at most, he dribbled in them throughout the day, while holding back any serious toileting needs; then, whenever he got back home, he would bring a diaper from his drawer and their mother would put him in it, so that he could do his business.
Their parents got so wrapped up in their own affairs, both business and social, that they'd let the years go by without thinking to address this unhealthy refusal to mature. It was easier to just let it go on, then it was to put their foot down about ending it. In Gary's opinion, it had at least a little to do with the fact that Mikey was the youngest, and so they were fine with letting him bloom late as the baby of the family.
It didn't help that Gary had led them to a parenting burnout, since he was a natural troublemaker whose antics put them in frequent parent-teacher conferences. Mikey had a mischievous side too, but it was far more innocent and it was relegated to home, so perhaps they were happy enough to leave his other issues be.
Regardless, it was the poopy bedtime diaper that had ultimately lost him the juvenile bet, and now on the night of Halloween, it was the shoddy costume that accentuated his padded state in a way that couldn't be minimized.
Trick-or-treating was on the agenda, with Gary being responsible for taking his brother out to get candy, but the older boy wasn't going to be satisfied with just that. Getting older, Halloween was becoming more about the scares, and that's why and his friend were more interested in visiting the 'haunted house' that was set-up in their neighborhood.
Mikey was definitely less interested in that idea, especially since it didn't come with any promise of candy, but his brother was adamant about going.
"Look, squirt...You can stay right outside, and just wait until me and Lucas come back, and then we can go trick-or-treating, okay?"
He'd furrowed his brow at the suggestion and whined about being left to boredom out in the front yard; he didn't say it, but he was also too much of a chicken to be out there, alone in the dark, on tonight of all nights. So instead, he declared he would be brave, and that he would join them inside the house.
The two older boys exchanged looks, "Okay, Mikey...But if you go in your pants, then you either have to go home or walk around with a full diaper. I definitely ain't gonna change your stinky butt, and we ain't gonna wait on mom to do it."
"I won't get scared! I won't be stinky!" He insisted in a fuss.
And so he'd enter, against his better judgment, into the spooky house that'd been filled to the brim with cheap frights and Halloween delights. Fake cobwebs stretched across every doorway, with big pipe-cleaner spiders attached to them; plastic skeletons were settled on furniture, and cackling skulls on tables; a fog machine kept everything blanketed in a layer of obfuscation, so that one's own imagination did the heavy lifting.
Somewhere in the house, a boombox was playing a grim organ tune, like a requiem for the living; interspersed with the dark melody were loud sound effects of creaking, breathing, banging, and shattering.
They weren't the only kids looking to get their dose of scares, and so they were also greeted by the screams and giggles of those who had gone further in than them. Adults in rubber monster masks and cheap costumes that they'd likely acquired from Party City or Spirit, were themselves primed to jump out at the unsuspecting kids who had wandered past them.
Gary and Lucas were more amused than outright scared, but Mikey was having a bit less fun than that; he was thoroughly disgusted by the boxes of 'eyeballs' and 'guts' that he had to stick his hands in, unaware they were peeled grapes and spaghetti noodles, and he had a nervous gait as they wandered through each unique room.
It would be the chainsaw that did him in, which was a room where a teenager in a hockey mask came at the trio with a chainless saw; it had all the noise and bluster of a real one, but was literally toothless for obvious safety concerns.
That was the moment that Mikey dropped a giant dookie-bomb in his diaper, and his poor bladder didn't do any better; it was fortunate that the saw was so loud, because it covered up the loud squelching sound of the fearful pantload being created. Funnily enough, he was so scared, that he didn't even realize that he'd loaded his pants up, even though the diaper now swelled hard against the TP bandages.
Sniffling and toddling into the next room, he would soon recognize the warm and swampy condition that his babypants had been left in, with each awkward step being a firm reminder of a less firm mess. The smell of his indiscretion wouldn't take long to waft either, leading Gary to eventually turn back and give him a look.
"Mikey...Did you...?"
"No!"
Lucas snickered, "Ah, man...He totally did! You can smell it."
"I did not! I-I wasn't scared!" Mikey whined.
It was obvious that neither of the older boys were buying that load of crap, and in fact, they knew quite well how literal that load of crap was. Gary took Mikey by the hand and shook his head, seeming slightly annoyed but more-so smugly superior about how right he had been.
"Come on, we're almost out, and then I'll check for myself."
Going through the last couple of rooms, Mikey could hear other kids behind them making comments about how it smelled like someone pooped their pants, and the little boy could only quietly blush at being the culprit.
Once they got outside, back into the chilly night, it became a lot more obvious what Mikey had done; the way his seat had swelled, had in turn loosened some of the wrapping around his backside. His poopy diaper was poking out pretty blatantly, and Gary gave the squishy back a jabbing prod.
"Yup...That's a number two, alright. Everyone can see it, too. I kinda figured this might happen, with how cheap your costume is." Gary snickered, letting it slip that this had more-or-less been his sadistic plan from the start.
"I think we should send the mummy packing to his mommy, don't you think?" Lucas giggled.
It'd been simple yet effective, really, to rid themselves of babysitting duties for the evening by inducing an accident that Mikey wouldn't be okay with waddling around in. The costume made it impossible to hide what fears the spook house had provided, and Gary was well aware his baby brother didn't want any other kids knowing about his diapers.
It'd be an early bedtime for the little stinker, while the two older boys could really cut loose and get up to some mischief.
