There is something to be said about that "ambient sound." Especially now, when life has screeched to a halt...at least in the ways we've known it. The recording made me think of you in a lavishly decorated hotel, while this grand piano is played and the characters filtering in and out with loads of stories (mundane or not) of their own. As if you're in your own little movie. There's so much life in this and I love it.

It is interesting to think about how this work was a precursor to much of what happens in The Telelibrary. It also speaks to your ability to get people to surprise themselves with what they say to your questions. And, as CY says, it really does bring about a visceral memory of the before-times. Thank you for sharing this.

By 2013, I had done quite a few interactions in public, but this was the first time I started working with audio equipment, so there was a lot I didn't know. By the time I got around to transcribing this interview, I was furious that I had picked up all that background noise. But years later, I also find myself enjoying it - everyone once in a while the piano just perfectly plays out the end of his thoughts. The lobby noises are also choice. My father is a documentary cinematographer, and I have distinct memories from my childhood of being in a particularly good lobby or public square and him whipping out a recorder to "catch some good background."

This is so lovely to listen to. And the piano / lobby combination in the background evokes such a visceral memory of the before-times.
