Monthly Blog #5 - July 2019 (Channel advertising, future of the "Reliving" videos)

What am I working on?
God of War Betrayal is next! As I've mentioned, it features a lot of behind the scenes in-sight as I emailed developers - it's coming very soon, followed by a video on the Toy Story 3 game :)
Channel Advertising Plans
So as I'm trying to turn YouTubing into a sustainable full-time job, an unfortunate reality is I will need to occasionally have sponsored advertising in videos. I'd like to avoid them entirely, and in the future if I can afford to not have advertising - I won't have advertising, but I'm about to move place and my cost of living will increase dramatically. So currently I am pursuing some sponsorship, but I have set myself some ground rules.
Right off the bat though - all sponsored videos will be available to all Patrons with the advertising removed (as unlisted videos).
All sponsorships will be:
- From reputable companies (Viceroy Kicks was a mistake) that I preferably have had previous experience with. Think typical YouTuber brands.
- Unobtrusive to the video - no overly long ad reads, no extended reads at the very start of a video, no interruptions at illogical times.
- Infrequent - I'm aiming for at most 1 in 3 videos having an integrated sponsorship.
Sponsorships will NOT be:
- Promoting any video games in any form - especially not mobile games. This is to prevent any level of conflict of interest.
- Promoting anything that I don't personally believe is a trustworthy brand or good product.
I'm really trying to keep it as non-intrusive and lightweight as possible, as I know ads can be annoying and I understand the concern with having a Patreon and sponsorships. If you have any quandaries or thoughts on this stuff please, please voice them because I want to do this right. Appreciate ya all as usual!
The future of the Reliving videos.
These have reached 2014 already! I realise that these are not particularly popular videos, with most only getting <10 views despite having 50+ patrons. This was somewhat expected, and a lot of the reason I wanted to make them was to practice unscripted chatting and I feel like they've helped a lot :)
As I've spoke about in those videos, I'm considering keeping it 5 years behind as to keep a long retroactive perspective on them, so after 2014 I'm considering stopping until next year, where I'll look at 2015's videos. However as they aren't super popular, I might see what the demand for them is like come 2020.
To fill the void I'm open to ideas for maybe something we could do every non Q&A month. Feel free to suggest anything here or in Discord :)
As usual I appreciate the support and this is a bit of a bombshell blog so I'd love to hear your thoughts if you have any!

Man, I'd like to say that I love your reliving videos, they always interesting and fun to watch, especially the ones that cover the games I've played. It's a bummer they are not that popular, and I hope that you will continue doing them nevertheless. Also a lot of respect for your wise and respectful position about sponsored ads. The way you chose to approach this is very balanced and definitely the one to go :)

Glad to hear we'll get sponsor-free versions of the videos! It's not something every content creator does for their patrons, so I'm happy to see that will be the case here. Also good to hear mobile games sponsorships are off the table. They seem to be everywhere lately and to me they kind of blend together. I get that they're popular but most of the ones I see advertised just look so...generic and bland. That being said, I understand the necessity of sponsorships to pay the bills, but hopefully you can have fun while doing them as well. Brutalmoose comes to mind as someone who does some fun sponsorships, the whole thing is usually a funny skit rather than just him reading bullet points for two minutes, which makes the thing advertised more memorable. Anyways, looking forward to the next videos!
