I think Peter's realization was that his timeline didn't change, but that he left it, and is now in an alternate timeline where he died as a kid. So these aren't the people that know him, they're alternate versions of them that never knew this Peter. First he was trying to make them remember him, but now he realizes they can't remember him because they really never met him.
