You are totally right that he did still have some involvement in mapping that last run of S2 episodes (though not outright directing/writing until the finale) and I do agree that there’s some great (and very important) stuff in those eps!

I'm right there with you on seeing the darkness of this show and feeling that its way too real and eerily familiar. A thought that brings me solace a little though, is that while the darkness of Twin Peaks may be real, that means the light can be too. We've got plenty of BOBs, but we've also got Dales and Lauras. I think if David Lynch wanted his audience to understand anything from his work (unlikely lol) it's that light and dark are codependent forces, one cannot exist without its other half.

Great performance from Ray Wise as Leland/BOB. The horror vibes really amped up with Leland's erratic behavior over this week's episodes.

On the Twin Peaks box set, there's an interview with Ray Wise, he said he initially auditioned for Sheriff Truman. They told him he didn't get that part, but they wanted him for Leland Palmer. He looked at the pilot episode script again and it was "Leland cries..." "Leland cries..." "Leland cries..." .... he also mentioned that who killed Laura was a big secret on set, none of the actors knew until they filmed the reveal. So, Ray Wise didn't know he was the killer until that episode, David Lynch pulled him aside and said, "it's you..."

Hats off to Ray Wise for his once-in-a-lifetime performance as Leland. It's mesmerising to watch his range and transformation. Comforting, horrifying, heartbreaking. The implication has always seemed to me that Leland as a young boy was sexually abused by Bob in the same vein as Laura. It's a representation of how the cycle of abuse can perpetuate through the generations. The one light in the ocean of horror is that Laura was able to break the cycle. Bob may have killed her, but she was strong enough to die as herself. It's not much, but it's something. I've got more thoughts on the whole Leland/Bob dynamic, but I'll save those for a later time. Ray Wise was magnificent in this show, and this episode. Sometimes his face contorts in such a way you can almost see the other actor Frank Silva, he's so good. He turns so utterly demonic.
