Same thing with the end credits! It’s believed to show what happens to Lucy after the events of the finale just before she decides to go to the moon.

Ahhhh, that ending scene crushed me so bad when I first watched it.. Also now that you've watched it, you can take another look at the opening for the anime, and you'll notice it foreshadows what happened to David! But yeah, I loved the series, the ending actually hurt me which hasn't happened in awhile...
