Mars is at opposition tonight. The brightest it will be for years.
🕑 Added 2020-10-13 19:03:10 +0000 UTCOpposition means directly opposite the sun. That means Mars is as close to perfectly "full" as it will be for this approach. The next time this happens is in roughly two years, but it will be a bit further away so not quite as full and bright.

It's actually mostly due to the sharpening algorithms used. They need a clean gradient to pull details out of the surface, and the edge complicates that. When I have really good seeing conditions the edge is more easily resolvable.
amazing Mars image ! question on the perimter edges - why is not possible to get detail right to the planet edge ? is it related to image processing process or maybe the planetary rotation. I notice this on almost every planet image.
