This diminutive painting by the African American painter Leroy Turner can hardly be enjoyed with a gaping hole in the board. But through careful conservation and a slightly unique approach, we'll get the Rhythm Restored.

Bravo!! I learned to make paper in college as well, but I would not have imagined using that skill on a project like this! Did the painting have varnish on it when it came in? If so did the cleaner you used for the dirt take the varnish off as well? Or was there no varnish to begin with and you added it for protection and color brightening? Really interesting project!!
Interesting video. Something different this time. I have a few questions. In this video you worked on a painting on cardboard. Are there any criteria when you would not do this and it would be better done by a paper conservator? My first guess would be you did it because it was oil painting and not say watercolor where you see much more of the paper texture. One additional question what would you do if someone would ask for something completely impossible like restoring the red/pink when the artist used natural carmine.
