I've seen some of the "restorations" and retouching that some of the most prestigious museums in America have filmed and posted. Without naming institutional names, I must say that they are often disappointing. Prestige is no substitute for careful, precise technique.
I think I'd like to see what their perspectives are on retouching and on how they manage some of the issues with that. Also, how they manage so many artworks with so many different contexts? I think one thing that comes to mind is the Mona Lisa, where they know the colours would be so different without the old varnish but they keep it the same. How do museums balance that, as opposed to your experiences with clients and your own professional opinion?
