The sharp buzz of my phone tore through the silence.
I flinched, heart lurching. Tiffany groaned beside me, her arm tightening around my stomach like she was trying to pull me back into the sheets. Her eyes fluttered, not quite awake, but aware enough to mutter a barely coherent, “Don’t move.”
“I gotta,” I whispered, trying to peel her off gently.
I twisted, squinting in the dark room, and spotted the glow of my phone—screen down—on the floor beside the bed. Must’ve fallen out of my pocket when— Well.
Still half-draped in a warm, sticky mess of limbs and skin, I leaned over and grabbed it, careful not to crush Tiffany under my weight.
Incoming call: Celia
Shit!
Without hesitation, I slid my thumb across the screen and brought it to my ear.
“Hey,” I said, voice still rough with sleep and maybe a little post-sex rasp.
“Ethan?!” Celia’s voice hit me like a slap. Not angry. Worried. “Where the hell are you? You didn’t come home!”
I winced and rubbed my temple. “Ah—sorry, sorry."
“So something did happen?” she snapped. “You didn’t even send a check-in message. I thought maybe you got attacked, or kidnapped, or…” She stopped her words. But I knew what she wanted to say. And yeah… it was related to my mom.
“I’m fine. My phone fell. I didn’t see it until now,” I said quickly. " I’m still with… uh…”
There was a beat of silence on my end. Tiffany shifted against me, mumbling something, still clinging tight.
“…I’m with Tiffany,” I finished.
Silence.
Then Celia’s voice dropped a notch. Suspicious. “Tiffany?”
“Yeah.”
“Like in her place?”
“In her apartment… Yeah.”
“And?”
I blinked.
I knew exactly what she was asking, but I didn’t know how to answer. Like, what was I supposed to say?
‘Hey sis, yeah, so I may have slept with our hot demon hunter stepsister who’s supposed to be trained to kill guys like me. Also turns out she’s had a crush on me. Oh, and I have popped her cherry. Nice, huh?‘
Uh-huh. Yeah. That’d go real well.
Still, the silence on the line stretched, and I could practically feel Celia’s eyebrow raise through the phone.
“And?” she repeated, slower this time.
“I’m just… here,” I said lamely. “It’s fine. We’re fine.”
Tiffany’s hand slid up my chest. “Who’s that?” she murmured sleepily against my shoulder.
“Celia,” I mouthed back. She blinked slowly, then buried her face in my neck like she didn’t care.
Celia let out a breath that sounded like a mix of frustration and relief. “Okay. Okay. You’re alive. That’s all I needed to hear.”
“Sorry for worrying you,” I said, softer now. “I didn’t mean to go dark.”
She didn’t respond immediately. Just breathed on the other end.
I waited.
It was one of those silences where I could tell she was trying to decide if she wanted to scold me or let it go. Classic Celia move.
She worried too much. Always did. Even when she was pissed, it was never really anger. It was fear in disguise. Fear I’d vanish like Dad. Fear I’d turn into something unrecognizable.
...Okay, that one might’ve already happened. But still.
“You know,” I said, clearing my throat and trying to sound casual, “you do remember we can communicate via telepathy, right?”
Another pause.
Then a muffled wince. “...Shit. I forgot again.”
I smirked to myself. “Of course you did.”
“It’s not like I use it every day, Ethan!”
“C’mon,” I said, dragging a hand through my hair. “My girls from the demon world use it constantly. Like, they don’t even bother with phones.”
“Oh please,” she groaned. “Don’t start comparing me to your lust coven. That’s not fair.”
“Technically, they’re partners,” I said, glancing at Tiffany. She was still half-asleep, warm as hell, arms locked around my waist from behind. “Plus, Emma and Mrs. Clea? They’re human. Demon hunters. And they still remember to use telepathy. What’s your excuse again?”
“I didn’t grow up with horns and contracts in my brain, thank you very much,” she snapped.
“Fair.”
“Also, screw you.”
I chuckled. “There it is.”
“Anyway…” Her voice softened. “I’m home now. With Foxy.”
“Ah, that explains the silence.”
I rolled onto my side, the sheets rustling, the scent of sex still clinging to the air. Tiffany groaned softly behind me, snuggling closer, like she was trying to become a literal part of my spine. Not that I minded.
“Oh,” Celia added suddenly, “don’t forget my dessert.”
Right. “Yeah, yeah,” I muttered. “I remember.”
“Good. Because I don’t care if you’re getting laid by a demon hunter—you have a responsibility.”
“Geez. Dramatic much?”
“Swear to God, if you show up without my dessert, I’m telling Tiffany you have a foot kink.”
I sat up slightly. “Okay, one—that’s slander. Two—I don’t have a foot kink.”
She laughed. “You know she’ll believe me.”
“You are a menace.”
“And you are dessert-debt scum.”
I smirked and leaned back into the pillow, letting Tiffany pull me down with her, her arm draped lazily across my chest.
“I already bought your dessert,” I said, keeping my voice casual. “I was this close to eating it earlier, not gonna lie.”
There was a pause. A loaded one.
“Luckily,” I added, glancing at Tiffany curled against me, “I had my own dessert.”
A beat of silence.
Then Celia’s voice snapped through the line, loud and incredulous. “Let me guess—Tiffany’s pussy?”
My smirk dropped.
Then shifted into a slow, wolfish grin. “You know, you really don’t have to say it out loud.”
“Ha! I knew it!” she cackled. “I knew it would happen. Like, the second you said you were in her place? Boom. Sex radar off the charts. Typical you.”
“Forgive me,” I drawled, “for being irresistible.”
“Oh, please.”
“No, seriously. It’s a burden. I wake up looking like this. What am I supposed to do? Just not destroy the self-control of every hot woman around me?”
“You’re the worst.”
“I am your brother.”
“Unfortunately.”
“You love me.”
“Tragically.”
We both laughed.
