After the formal exchange with Curtis ended, Jyne and I were escorted down one of the many crystalline hallways by a tall snow elf servant.
Al had already split off, getting his own quarters in the wing just a corridor over from ours. He gave me a smirk as he passed, muttering something about “hoping the bed isn’t frozen.” If only he knew.
Two of my dragon soldiers trailed behind us until we reached the large arched door to my room. They posted themselves on either side immediately, without being told. Loyal. Reliable. I gave them a nod and pushed open the door.
And immediately almost groaned out loud.
“Oh… by the Flame…”
The room was magical—I'll give it that.
Huge, grand ceiling arched high above like a frozen cathedral, faint glowing crystals embedded in the frosty walls, casting pale-blue light that danced over everything. Intricate carvings of snowy vines and icy feathers wrapped around the columns, the entire place screaming Snow Elf Nobility.
But the centerpiece—the bed—looked like it had been stolen directly from the Frost Queen’s damn vault.
A massive, curved frame of pure ice shaped like blooming lotus petals, rising behind it like a frozen crown. And the bed itself? Covered in silken white sheets with snowflake patterns that probably cost more than most villages—but still practically radiating cold.
It was a bed fit for royalty, sure. A frozen, ice-loving, frost-resistant royal.
“Feels like I just walked into a beautifully decorated freezer,” I muttered under my breath, jaw tightening as I felt the faintest chill tickle my skin through the magic-lined walls. The air wasn’t even that cold, technically—they had some magic in here to regulate the temperature—but the aesthetic? The psychological pressure of all this ice?
It was doing wonders for my warm-blooded dragon instincts.
And something about it just made my scales itch.
So, just to be sure, I opened my system with a thought, narrowing my focus to the room around me.
[Skill Activated: Observation]

[Security glyphs: Two passive alarms linked to outer hallway]
[Privacy Status: Room secure. No scrying present. No listening spells detected.]
I exhaled. Alright. At least the snow elves weren’t dumb enough to plant surveillance in my room. Not that I’d put it past Curtis to try and slip something in last minute, but for now, it was clean.
Still didn’t make the bed look any more appealing.
‘Room’s clear,’ I thought. ‘No spying enchantments. No traps. Just an offensively cold aesthetic.’
Jyne stepped in behind me and took one glance at my face before bursting into soft laughter.
“Oh no,” she grinned, biting her bottom lip. “You’ve got that look.”
“What look?” I asked dryly, pulling off my cloak and giving the bed another suspicious glance.
“The I’m-about-to-turn-into-my-dragon-form-just-to-burn-this-decor look,” she teased.
I let out a breath through my nose. “It’s just… so cold. Look at this thing,” I gestured to the bed like it had personally insulted me. “Is it made of ice? Does it need to look like it’s made of ice? Can’t they slap on some illusion magic or at least a warm blanket?”
Jyne giggled again, walking further into the room and brushing her fingertips across a frosted column. “It’s pretty though. All this… elegance. Snow elves really do have taste. It’s just not your taste.”
“Exactly,” I muttered, eyeing a nearby chair that was carved from ice too—but at least it had a cushion.
She walked past me, then paused, turning around with a coy smile. “Would you rather go back outside and sleep with Frosty?”
I snorted. “Don’t tempt me. He probably has more body heat than this room.”
She laughed, then walked over to the bed and pressed her palm to the sheet. “Hmm… okay, this is actually cold. I could cast a mild warming enchantment if you want. Or we can ask for a room change.”
I waved a hand. “No. That’ll cause unnecessary noise. Let’s keep it simple. I’ll survive.”
She tilted her head. “Dragon pride?”
“Dragon survival instinct,” I replied. “We don’t complain. We adapt. Even if it’s under protest.”
She grinned again and walked around the room, checking the windows and inspecting the symbols on the walls. “You know, if this was a trap, I’d give them points for style.”
I chuckled. “Same. At least we’d die somewhere majestic.”
Jyne turned back to me and crossed her arms. “So… what now?”
I glanced toward the bed again and sighed. “Now, we rest. Tomorrow’s going to be chaos. And if we’re lucky, a rescue.”
“I’ve never seen you hesitate like that before,” she said quietly, walking up beside me.
I blinked. “Hesitate?”
“With Kaelen. Curtis. You looked like you almost… changed your mind.”
I was quiet for a second, then nodded slowly. “I did. I saw Curtis holding him and thought—maybe he’s just doing his best. Maybe I misjudged him. But then I checked.”
Jyne’s expression sobered. “And?”
“There’s a rune inside the boy,” I said, my voice low and sharp. “Advanced. Magical trigger. And it’s keyed to Curtis.”
Her face tightened. “That’s disgusting.”
“Yes,” I said, jaw clenching. “So I don’t regret what I’m planning. Not anymore.”
She put a hand on my shoulder. “Good. Because if you hesitated… you’d regret that even more.”
I met her gaze. Strong. Steady.
Gods, I was lucky to have her.
I nodded, the fire inside me simmering steady again. “Right. Let’s rest while we can.”
Jyne smirked again and walked to the bed, sitting down and patting the spot beside her. “Well, if we freeze, at least we freeze together.”
I gave her a dry look. “You’re enjoying this too much.”
“Oh, absolutely.”
And despite the ridiculous ice-themed decor and the room that screamed please be cold and beautiful and emotionally repressed, I felt the tension ease just a little as I sat down beside her.
