Progress Report - March 14 - 2022
🕑 Added 2022-03-15 09:37:19 +0000 UTCHello, everyone!
It's been a bumpy-but-productive week for Overbreed, as you can probably infer from this post's image, and the fact that I have attached a 2.5-minute-long WIP render of new footage to the bottom of this Patreon post.
It has been bumpy in the sense that, if you've read the screenplay posted way back when, then you know that the sequence immediately following the facefucking--the missionary sequence before the arm-pinning and choking--is the weakest sequence of the entire damn Overbreed Episode 1 video. I've known it, you've known it, everyone whose ever read it has known it.
I knew when I wrote it that it was just kind of floating. It didn't serve any narrative purpose. There was no character development in it. No information was learned, no kinks revealed, no new personality traits exposed. It was a step back in terms of intensity from the wall-fuck and facefuck that preceded it, and the only purpose it really served was to transition into the arm-pin missionary, before transitioning into choking Sombra into her first orgasm. Something that could have been done without the transition, cutting straight to the more interesting parts.
I only really kept it in the screenplay because it wasn't really offensive, but it was dead weight. I knew it when I wrote it, I knew it when I revised the screenplay (several times), I knew it when I posted it. I knew it when it came time to animate it, too.
For posterity, here is what this missionary scene looks like in the screenplay:
A total of five sentences of dialogue. The descriptions take up more space than the dialogue itself. And those five sentences of dialogue are vapid and rote. Worst of all, they actively point out how boring this sequence is, practically screaming that the writer should never have committed it to paper. It's almost a parody of itself.
With all that in mind, when it came time to animate it, unlike all the previous times before, I didn't just skip over it. Instead, I decided to do something about it. I decided to give it function, to give it purpose.
And what better purpose could there be, than popping out tiddies?
I don't think it's a big secret, looking over the corpus of my work, that I personally prefer clothed breasts over bare tiddies. I prefer the shape, the curvature, of a nice push-up bra, that signature line of cleavage. But, I also know I'm in a minority here.
I always planned to have the bare tiddies come out at some point in this video. But they were just going to sort of suddenly be there, without any real transition or anything to it. Just, clothed tiddies one scene, cross-fade to the next and oop, tiddies are out now. It was never going to have fanfare. It wasn't going to be a big deal. It was never anything that had any significance to me. It was just fan-service, as far as I was concerned. Uninspired fan-service, for that matter.
But, while searching for a purpose to assign to this missionary sequence, I had a revelation come to mind: I could animate the tiddies coming out. Not only would it be a great way to fill this missionary sequence out, doing something genuinely interesting with the fact they are within arms' lengths of each other face-to-face, and aren't relying on their arms for support--pretty much the only time in the entire video both these conditions are met--but it would both be a fantastic bit of progression and a nice visual treat, as well as a small relief from the barrage of loops that the sequence has been snowballing into.
And so, over the past few days, I managed to take these boring and uninspired five sentences of dialogue, and rework them into 2 and a half minutes of progression, both in character development and in narrative development.
Compared to last time, where I took something like a month's detour with the facefucking sequence, this was only a brief week detour. I already have it rerouted back into the original screenplay, albeit I am going to need to very slightly alter the dialogue for when Mercy pins Sombra's arms down. "Is this more interesting, then?" doesn't really make sense, following from "fuck me like you mean it."
In total then, Sequence C here is currently at 12:15 in terms of runtime. As I will likely repeat every time I bring it up, that is 12:15 of pure sex animation, with zero narrative animation being built, and Sequence C is--as its name suggests--the third sex sequence in the project, meaning that it is only a part of the final total runtime. And, as I will likely repeat every time, I cannot even begin to give a projection of what that total runtime will be, other than "long".
I've made progress on a few other things in the week since, but I think Overbreed here really is the star of the report, so I won't bother annotating the rest. The decision to slow the Mini-Vids down to every other month, I think, has made a huge improvement to my psyche. I just sat down and fucking churned through this over the past few days. It felt good to rip and tear through this.
Sequence C is now up to five individual project files in SFM, so split because the idle memory usage from all of the animation data keeps getting to the point I can barely make forward progress without hitting the 4GB limit and crashing SFM. For a point of reference, when I finally split them, the 4th project file takes up 2750MB of memory from me doing nothing more than loading it up. When you crash at 3400MB, that doesn't leave a lot of room. Then considering that extending this missionary loop 3 seconds consumes on the order of 200MB... Yeah, there was a lot of restarting SFM involved in building out these 150 seconds of animation.
The new project file, by comparison, only consumes 1800MB on file load. It's still a bit high, but with nearly a full GB of memory more to work with, it's much more manageable than it was before the split.
I don't even want to think about how much of a bitch it's going to be unifying the lighting and materials and any scene adjustments I end up making across all of these project files, though. Hopefully I won't need to.
Next up is figuring out how the fuck to animate Mercy hopping up onto the exam table to lay on top of Sombra, pin her arms beside her head, and shatter her pelvis bone. I would love to have everything up to Sombra's first choking orgasm done by next week, but I think that's a bit much to hope for. I should definitely get the arm-pinning done though.
We'll see.
At any rate, that's all I have for now! Until next time, everyone!
