Yes this is a prequel, it takes place roughly a decade before the events of Red Lantern

Considering this takes place before Red Lantern....highly doubtful the first one. The second is more likely.

My (half hopeful, half serious) guess is Luther comes to, sees what the officers have done with Grayson and maybe takes that as a final straw to cut ties with the Empire in the name of the freedom Grayson offers. Finds a way to get Grayson off the ship with him and deserts to Lotus. Or duty wins out and he frees Grayson but stays back to face his own repercussions.
