The CCP’s legal vanguard, the Department of Justice and the Judiciary, puts on a “rule-of-law” show together. The former racks its brains to prosecute as many “anti-government” folks as possible for offending against “unknown principles” prone to falling into the ultra-generous coverage of HKNSL, whereas the latter deprives defendants of their human rights written in the Basic Law and, by all appearances, gives non-coherent and disproportionate heavy sentences in many rulings. Both parties seem to work very hard to carry out the party’s agenda under the disguise of the rule of law: disseminating the idea of the rule by fear on the political side so as to crush all opposing voices, whereas yearning for global financial institutions to keep faith with the rule of law, a long-standing gold-lacquered signboard to make HK succeed. Perhaps we’re deemed to be defeated if we can’t jump outside the rule-of-law frame of mind when wrestling with an opponent without moral boundaries. I recall a famous quote of Franz Kafka: “Evil knows of the good, but good does not know of evil.”
