I just completed reading the whole book. Very insightful and interesting. The whole experience is like watching the movie ‘The Hours’. History is intertwined and woven into the moment as we are today. While today may seem like an epilogue to bid farewell to things we held dear, but there is no doubt that will turn into a prologue for the distance future. Who could have imagined the aftermath of “Kristallnacht” as far away in Germany could be connected to and shaped part of history in Shanghai? History is not a standalone event, but a series of events that influenced the present and will continue to influence the future. The major insight we could get from this book is the difference in the decisions made by two families. A choice between stay and leave. We do not have a crystal ball to see into the future, but the choice alone had made the present of the two families with such drastic difference in outcome. Same goes for the people in Hong Kong. As far as people might think the prominent House Kadoorie have spoken out lately, they still maintain their decency and neutrality. It is a lesson so many in Hong Kong should take note from. Everything is about interests and gains. To prevail and survive, people should reckon on this.
