Many non-Chinese investment bankers became less competitive in dealing with Chinese investments, which is the majority of the activities nowadays. For example if you don’t want to trade your liver away for new businesses by drinking lots of Moutai, that maybe one limitation. When exogenous events in recent years give it a nudge, many went packing. Everyone around the world are facing similar problems. The Americans thinks the Chinese are taking away their jobs. But on the other side Neijuan (內卷) is also well known in China. Many Chinese jobs went to Vietnam, Bangladesh or the machine for example. Haigui (海龜) don’t necessarily get the same premium they used to. Expats worldwide may find that neither side consider you are one of them after you have been away for a while. The world keeps changing ever faster, keep learning and keep adapting. The new stance from Stephen Roach is neither important nor insightful.
