中國扶植伊朗和「抵抗軸心」，就是希望出現制衡親美中東政權的力量，讓美國、其他中東國家投鼠忌器，並通過「只有我可以說服伊朗」這樣的煙幕，促成類似年前伊朗-沙特大和解協議那樣的突破，去彰顯自身的大國國力。
但一旦整個伊朗陣營不再成氣候，以色列的區域霸主、美國代理人地位重新得到肯定，沙特等國對美國陽奉陰違的空間就會減少。中國過去二十年以為可以逐步通過經濟、外交手腕滲入中東，雖然不至於被瞬間打回原形，但失去了一個有力槓桿，實力自會受損。
在這條戰線，中國可以著力的地方較多，例如通過聯合國調解戰爭、在安理會施壓停戰等等，甚至通過輸送「人道救援物資」予伊朗，去強化在伊朗的勢力範圍。加強宣傳美國違反國際法，大概是指定的大外宣口徑，從而希望勉強成為一個利益攸關方，不致於被完全漠視。然而這次美國發放了並未離開中東的強烈訊號，中東各國日後引入中國資金時，也多了投鼠忌器。既然美國的空襲，也是對中國在中東影響力的「間接空襲」，又怎會願意讓中國承擔調解員的角色？
中國外交一直強調所謂「no strings attached」，其實唯利是圖的形象，卻是深入民心。伊朗不會不知道在中國利益而言，最理想的結局，絕對和官方立場剛好相反：最好戰爭曠日持久下去，讓美軍捲入得越深越好、伊朗人民傷亡越嚴重越好，屆時既可以虛耗美國國力，轉移美國在太平洋的關注（儘管美國依然有兩面作戰的能力），又可以利用戰爭激起的反美主義，在中東擴大自身利益、在西方宣傳左翼理論。屆時才有資格擔任調解員，去通過外交手段，儘量保住在中東的經濟利益。
可是現在面對的是美國手術式一次性突襲，中國就無計可施。
說來，在以色列發動戰爭時，中國對這場戰爭的態度有點曖昧，只能重複人道主義那一套陳腔濫調，並沒有像伊朗官方宣傳那樣「譴責」以色列。現在也只是譴責美國空襲聯合國原子能機構監管下的核設施，而儘量避免觸及戰爭誰是誰非等問題。中國牆內網絡世界也是揶揄伊朗不堪一擊為主，也就是「食花生」。這說明北京並不願意、也不敢徹底站在以色列的對立面，背後的訊息量很大。
和以色列維持友好關係，讓它要利益分贓時不要忘記中國、也就是送上「中國牌」讓其方便制衡美國，也是北京亡羊補牢的手段之一。這和伊朗期望的中國，自然大有落差。

74% of China’s crude oil is imported, around 43% of that come from the Middle East. Iran is replaceable, but Middle East is not. China is very sensitive on energy security issues — solar, wind, electric vehicles, rare earths and nuclear reactors, all have to do with this. One may argue Belt and Road and the Strait of Malacca are not unrelated to energy either. The Middle East is critical for China until they become energy independent. Furthermore China is still going through a prolonged economic slump. Recall at the start of the war on Ukraine, supply chains choked up quickly with subsequent spiking inflation. A spiking oil price would be untimely for China. With the ongoing tariff war and the rerouting of China’s excess export capacity, Europe can only take so much of the produce, Asian nations as a whole are natural exporters not importers, so energy security aside, petrodollars is an important source for trade and investment. Ideally a “contained” conflict that bogs down the US, doesn’t get out of control, China doesn’t get involved, other Middle East countries are not upset, and their energy security is unaffected would be most desirable — but too many “if”s. Similarly for Russia, a distracted US will help, a higher oil price wouldn’t hurt either, but they have to make their own security calculations in the Middle East. A big mess, but on balance I don’t see any of the 3 parties really want things getting out of hand. But it could.
