This is complex. It is not just polarisation but tribalism. Unlike the age of broadcasting, a fragmented market with many creators incentivises appeal to the extreme rather than the middle ground. That by itself is no fault of the platform companies. Combine that with profit-maximising algorithms that select for outrage and narrowing content. The Like buttons that promotes instant public judgment on things we know little. The digital tattoos that cements commitment. The reinforcement that comes with pounding in what we pound out in the open. The instinct to cancel to uphold moral code. Gustave Le Bon’s work on how individuals transform when absorbed into crowds. And heavens know what generative AI will do when you put that in the mix. Humans are built to socialise face-to-face. It is not a surprise many things could go wrong.
