🕑 Added 2024-07-24 18:00:05 +0000 UTCOMG. I knew this was gonna be a rough episode, but I think I cried here just as much as I did after Keith died. I mean, I am an emotional person by nature, but this was insane. Lots of ugly crying, but I guess you guys are used to that by now.
How do you explain to a five-year-old that their friend is dead? I do not envy Nathan and Haley this episode. I love that Jamie asks if he can have Q's jersey, and Nathan tells him, he thinks Q would like that. I 100% agree. He loved Jamie was much as the rest of us did. But then Jamie deciding that Q's brother Andre should get it, come on.
And speaking of Andre, I was so nervous that his family was going to be mean when they showed up at his house. For no real reason other than, grief sucks. And it's hard to process. But then when she went out of her way to individually thank all of them for treating him so well- I couldn't handle it.
Not only does Haley have to do this with Jamie, but she's got an entire class that she's got to figure out how to get them to process this. I think, at the end of the day, writing on the desk was a good idea. It's cathartic, and feels a little rebellious, which seemed very Q.
In non Quintin related news, we had Dan managing to escape, but he's so weak and injured that he doesn't make it very far. He collapses in the yard near the grave sight. Which Carrie tells him is her son's, and then hits him in the face with a shovel. She does have a new plan for getting Jamie though. I don't know if it's any better, but she's got one.
I really hope that Brooke goes to see that therapist. Right now it seems like she's taking it out of politeness, but I really hope that changes. She really needs to work through this. And honestly, I've been advocating therapy for all of these kids for years now.
And the Skills/Deb relationship has finally been exposed. I don't know how Nathan is gonna take it, but at least he didn't make a scene at the funeral.

Yes...this episode hits in a completely different way then Keith's death did. Maybe because there was so much focus on Dan because the audience knew what he did, but to have a random act of violence take the life of a young kid that had his whole life in front of him, hits on a different emotional level I believe. I mean death and grief is most definitely a universal component that we all have to navigate in this life, and the show didn't disappoint. It was definitely beautifully written, acted, and produced, and the music scoring was a home run. All of the choices really elevated the scenes and performances in a way that really stands out as tops for the entire series. The artists and composers were brilliant. Also, the characters being a bit older, and in the case of Naley, they have a family now, so having to explain this tragic situation to a young Jamie also hits in a different way then we saw play out with Keith. Just being able to see how Q's death has impacted everyone and effected these characters lives is powerful storytelling for sure. Adding in Brooke's personal struggle and Nathan being able to play that paternal supportive role for her, was great to see and really underscores what a great guy and father Nathan Scott has become. And the Deb/Skills stuff was played for levity in this heavy episode, which I thought really worked well too. And then we have the reveal of Carrie losing a son as well, which I guess helps to explain her batshit crazy state of mind and having her and Dan continue to go toe to toe, never gets old. That's a fascinating duo to watch on screen for sure, lol!!! Overall, as sad as this episode is to watch and get through, I remember it feeling so powerful and special when it was airing, and that hasn't changed one bit all these years later. They did such a wonderful job with it......everyone should be extremely proud of their work :)

Over the years I've gotten numb to 3:16, probably because its the one everyone is waiting for reactors to reach, its still an emotional storyline, but I can get through it mostly fine. This one is still one that always gets me teary eyed, no matter how many times I've seen it and how much time has passed since, especially when Brooke finally breaks down. From the tragedy of his age, from the story parallels between him and Nathan, that it almost feels like a 'what if Nathan never had a partner like Hailey, would he have still changed for the better?', to his dynamic with Jamie, his desire to turn his life around and have a family of his own, to the fact that he just happened to be there at that place, at that time with no fault of his own...everything is so, so sad and tragic. Brilliant writing and acting.

That scene with Brooke and Nathan was James Lafferty's idea. In the original script this scene didn't appear and James went to the writers and was pretty much like "It's weird that Nathan wouldn't see that Brooke is going through something and wouldn't talk to her about it since they were such good friends since childhood and went through similar struggles in a similar social circles." I'm paraphrasing but that's the gist of what he said. And then the writers added the scene. When you said what a good parent Nathan is it made me think of a quote that Sophia Bush said in a podcast. This is the exact quote and I love it so much "Interestingly because Brooke had this terrible relationship with her parents and they haven't been there for her and Nathan has had this terrible relationship with Dan but like Deb is finally showing up for him. He's able to show up for Brooke as the dad he is... Jamie's dad. I felt like he was being my father figure in this scene and it was so kind. Brooke's never had that." π On another note... in my opinion this is the saddest episode in all of television. It's like a constant emotional gut punch π
