9-1-1 8X12: Disconnected
🕑 Added 2025-03-31 23:23:23 +0000 UTCI really, really enjoyed this episode. Finally we get some Christopher. AND we get Eddie and Christopher together. I'm so happy.
So, we've got Eddie in Texas trying to get a job at the fire department. The captain tells him that Bobby have him the best reference and recommendation he's ever heard. But, he's a afraid that Eddie might go back to LA and not sure about hiring him. Eddie assures him he's here for the long hall (boo!) and it seems like it's going to work out. However, a few days later, the captain tells him he'd love to hire him, but there's a hiring freeze and he can't right now. Could be two months, could be a year.
He's struggling to connect with Christopher. And his mom is sort of answering for Christopher and cutting Eddie off a bit. It's not horrible, but it's obvious that there is tension here. Eddie has put every cent he has to buying this house and he doesn't have any savings to live on while he looks for another job, so he starts to drive for Uber.
At first, it's not going that well. He's too chatty and overbearing. But, finally, a rider takes pity on him and tells him how to many good money from the app. It works! Pretty soon Eddie is rolling in the dough. The only problem is that his parents and Christopher all think he's working as a fire fighter. This all comes crashing down on him, when Christopher is his fare. They pretend not to know each other (Christopher was with his friend), but later he texts Christopher an apology for lying to him about it, and Christopher doesn't respond for a long time.
Towards the end of the episode, Christopher shows up at the house, and they finally have a real discussion. I mean, I don't think everything is fixed now, but at least we've started the process. These two have been estranged for way too long.
I also really enjoyed the Maddie stuff this episode too. It's her first day back to work and she's excited about it. But, during her first call, she loses her voice and ability to speak. Turns out, it just more trauma this poor woman is dealing with. The last time she took a 9-1-1 call, she got kidnapped by a serial killer. The doctor doesn't seem that worried though. He basically tells her, her voice will come back when it's ready. He tells to rest and gives her some vocal exercises.
However, it seems to be a conversation with Athena that helps the most. She tells Maddie that she needs to be more afraid for someone else, than herself. And when she gets to that place, she'll be able to get her voice back. And damn if that doesn't work. While she and Jee are at the park, Maddie can't see her. And while she's running around frantically and getting more and more scared for Jee, she's finally able to shout for her. (Jee's fine. She was just in a tunnel).
By the end of the episode, Maddie is back at work, her voice is fine, and she's her strong self again. One of the things I really liked about this story is that, always sort of feel like people heal too quickly on this show. So, it was nice to play around with the fact that while Maddie is physically okay, the trauma does not end there.

i really appreciated how grounded this episode felt compared to the rest of the show. i love when it’s crazy and wacky too but i will always root for the more character focused plots to take center stage. it was nice to get so much eddie focus in this one. eddie’s mom makes me crazy so i’m hopeful he’ll stand up to her at some point and put his foot down because chris is his son and not hers. and hopefully they’ll further explore him and chris getting closer too and then they can move back home to LA where they belong.
