There are various issues to do with UK armed police procedure which make that ending seem fairly unlikely, but a shot from that far can easily be fatal! Of course, in this case the cops were terrible shots so he survived. ;)

Such a great little show. No huge budget. No huge stars (although they are now). Just 2 fucked up kids, in a number of fucked up situations, that not only grip the screen but have a hold of ya' feels from the get-go.
