Ward did not merge with HIVE. He did die and his corpse was taken over by HIVE. Like all the other "sacrifices" before him.

Ward is gone but not gone. Instead he merged with "Hydra Prime" somehow. Nicky relates some sort of family 'soap operaish" stuff maybe related to her family or some people she knows? The romantic dilemma for Jemma and Fitz is resolved by the usual expedient plot device (death).
