Lucas really seemed to fumble Padme on paper. For as willful as she is, it's never really clear what she's after -- it's enough that she's the "good guy" and the Separatists are the "bad guys", but she's basically just an incredibly naive idealist...which is actually pretty realistic given she's a literal royalty who now is an elected representative. She has a bit of a messiah complex. If Lucas intended all this, then well-done, but I suspect he just wanted Padme to be a paragon of liberal idealism first and foremost, without really any consideration of what political savvy she should possess or specific goals she's actually aiming for. So much of the nuances of the dispute between the Republic and the Separatists is poorly demonstrated in Ep. 2 already, which would have been a much better use of screentime to the romance subplot.

I think your analysis on Padme is a bit harsh, but I found your explanation and justification of your perspective really interesting. One of those instances where I disagree with the conclusion but the writer explained themselves well enough that I'm not annoyed by it. I actually quite like Anakin's characterization in this film as well, I think I would have just toned down the delivery of some of the whinier moments. I think George wanted to make sure certain things were understood about Anakin. However, I also think some of that led people to have a harder time empathizing with him.
