Could this be how the placebo ACTUALLY works?
🕑 Added 2024-08-10 16:40:20 +0000 UTCRobert O Becker was a researcher in the field of bioelectromagnetics, who delved into the intricate mechanism of action through which direct electric currents controlled by the a ‘primitive’ part of the brain and nervous system could elucidate fascinating phenomena such as the placebo effect, regeneration capabilities as well as some of the benefits seen in advanced meditation.
Becker's research on the intricate relationship between direct current electric currents and healing processes hints at a scientific mechanism underlying the role of electric signals in regulating physiological responses and promoting regeneration. Becker's pioneering work elucidated how DC electric currents play a pivotal role in facilitating cellular communication, tissue repair, and regeneration, providing some wild insights into the intersection of bioelectricity and biological processes.
At the core of Becker's investigation was the concept that DC electric currents serve as crucial mediators of cell-to-cell communication and coordination within the body. These electric signals, generated by the brain and other tissues, play a massive role in transmitting information and regulating various physiological functions. By manipulating and studying DC currents in experimental settings, Becker discovered that these electrical signals could modulate cell behavior, influence tissue growth, and contribute to the body's healing responses.
One of the key mechanisms through which DC electric currents operate in relation to healing and regeneration is through the process of electrotaxis. Electrotaxis refers to the directional movement of cells in response to electric fields, a phenomenon that has been observed in various biological systems. Becker's research demonstrated that DC electric currents could guide the migration of cells towards specific locations, thereby facilitating tissue repair and regeneration. By modulating the electric environment surrounding damaged tissues, DC currents could promote the recruitment of cells involved in the healing process and enhance the formation of new tissue structures.
Becker's studies revealed the role of DC electric currents in regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and gene expression. Electric signals have the capacity to influence the behavior of cells at the molecular level, triggering intracellular signaling pathways that govern key cellular processes. By exposing cells to specific electric fields, Becker reliably showed that DC currents could stimulate cell division, promote the differentiation of stem cells into specialized cell types, and regulate the expression of genes involved in tissue regeneration.
Another aspect of Becker's findings was the impact of DC electric currents on the body's immune response and inflammatory processes. By modulating the electric microenvironment at sites of injury or inflammation, DC currents can influence the activity of immune cells, the release of signaling molecules, and the resolution of inflammatory reactions. (SPM’s biosynthesis are tied to DC current). Becker's research suggested that by manipulating the electrical properties of tissues, it might be possible to modulate immune responses and promote a more efficient healing process.
Here’s where things get really interesting.
Becker's work ALSO sheds light on the influence of consciousness and altered states of awareness on physiological processes, and challenge conventional understandings of healing and the mind-body connection. Particularly around things like meditation and the placebo effect. Fields of study like psycho-neuro-immunology has demonstrated a clear link between things like emotional health and well being on disease severity and healing outcomes. But many of the actual mechabsism (meaning the step by step biochemistry) still haven’t been elucidated.
Becker's exploration of the relationship between electric currents and brain function led to the proposition that the brain operates as a complex electrical system, with the potential to influence various bodily functions through the modulation of electric signals as we mention. He postulated that DC currents played a crucial role in orchestrating these processes, serving as a means through which the brain (and conciousness) could regulate physiological responses and potentially facilitate healing and regeneration.
One of the key observations made by Becker was the correlation between consciousness and the modulation of electric currents in the body. Through his research, Becker found that individuals in altered states of consciousness, such as those induced during hypnosis, exhibited distinct changes in electric activity within the brain. By measuring the electric responses of patients undergoing hypnosis, Becker discerned how alterations in consciousness could impact the flow of DC currents, thereby influencing physiological processes and potentially unlocking the body's innate healing capacities.
Becker's investigations into the placebo effect highlighted the intricate interplay between consciousness, belief systems, and therapeutic outcomes. The placebo effect intrigued Becker as it underscored the power of the mind in influencing health outcomes. He speculated that the placebo effect could be attributed to the brain's ability to modulate electric currents in response to positive expectations and beliefs, thereby eliciting physiological changes that contribute to perceived benefits.
We can also thing of the DC current as the linchpin in the orchestrating process related to the placebo effect — altered states of concious influence the strength of the DC current —> the DC current plays a direct role in cell migration towards sights of injury, inflammation and disease. We know altered states of conciousness and positive thinking impact the immune system. Might the DC current be the stimulus that tell the immune system what to do and where?
His research elucidating the mechanisms through which consciousness and electric currents intersect to influence healing, Becker proposed a paradigm-shifting perspective on the role of the mind in health and wellness. By integrating his findings on the control of DC electric currents by the brain, the impact of altered states of consciousness, and the nature of the placebo effect, Becker laid the groundwork for a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between mind, body, and healing processes. Things we now see being discussed in the world of past and current prominent figures in the spiritual and ‘conciusness’ movement like Joe dispenza and Jose Silva.
Becker also frequently talked about individuals who could exert control over physiological processes such as pain perception, temperature regulation, and blood flow. One of the fascinating phenomena observed by Becker was the ability of certain individuals to undergo surgery without anesthesia by harnessing the power of hypnosis to modulate their consciousness and alter their perception of pain. Through the use of hypnosis, patients could focus their attention and intention on specific parts of their body, effectively dampening the experience of pain and discomfort typically associated with surgical procedures. Becker's research suggested that by inducing a state of heightened awareness and focus, individuals could potentially modulate the transmission of pain signals in the brain by impacting the DC current, thereby mitigating the sensation of pain during invasive medical treatments.
This has been replicated and performed in the past, particularly with patients who where anesthesia is entirely contraindicated. It takes a fair bit of prior training (and suggestibility to hypnosis first).
The ability of individuals to regulate physiological responses such as temperature and blood flow through conscious control and intention has also been demonstrated with various forms of biofeedback. In certain experiments, patients were able to cool their hands or increase blood flow to specific areas of the body through focused attention and visualization techniques. By directing their consciousness towards the desired outcome, Becker believed individuals could potentially influence the flow of DC electric currents within their body, thereby modulating vascular responses and thermoregulatory mechanisms among many other things
Here’s where things get really fuckin wild.
Becker also postulated that these fields could potentially enable individuals to perceive within their bodies without using their eyes. Becker suggested that the combination of morphogenic fields and DC electric currents could relay a three-dimensional blueprint of information within the body, allowing for a unique form of visualization to take place under altered states of consciousness like meditation or hypnotherapy.
In his book ‘cross currents ‘Becker discussed the intriguing idea that conscious visualization could play a role both systemic and localized healing responses. He shared a story where a boy used meditation to visualize a tumor within his body shrinking, and remarkably, the description of the tumor provided by the boy during this visualization was reportedly accurate. Both the shape and size of the tumor, and what was left over afterward (a small calcium deposit). This suggests a potential connection between consciousness, visualization, and the accurate perception of internal conditions in a way that hasn’t been described (to my knowledge) anywhere else
This could describe a more direct benefit for practices like meditation and visualization, compared to the vague theories we often hear surrounding things like ‘immune boosting’ etc.
I get that this is very much theoretical and a little hard to believe . But it’s extremely interesting nonetheless. Maybe this will provide you with new motivation to engage in a mindfulness practice

My girlfriend experienced a young boy who did something like this once They went to this special school in south africa that focused on meditation or something She tested the boy by writing words on a piece of paper while his eyes were closed and he could tell what she wrote without looking, by just visualizing in his head She and a couple people tested this again and again with holding objects, moving him to the end of the room, etc. and he could tell what you were hiding. Theres some videos on tiktok as well something about the monroe institute
