Aspartame is Safe & TikTok Dietitians Aren't

Excellent video. The part about aspartame studies reminded me about the nasty bitter-tasting by product(s) aspartame turns into if one lets a diet coke sit around for weeks. Which makes me wonder whether tox studies on aspartame took by-products into account or just tested the pure substance.

Doesn't it seem like that is just people having more because they can without loading up on sugar and calories? And potentially because their body isn't telling them "hey, that's a lot of calories" as it might with actual sugar. It's not flawless reasoning, but generally might seem intuitive to people. I think "in moderation" applies to any statement of safety, although the margins between acceptable intake and adverse effects are generally very high. I've seen some research headlines that suggest people *might* overcompensate with other sources of calories when using lots of low cal sweeteners. Not sure how good the evidence for that is, but seems plausible (it's probably correlative epidemiological type research, which means it's harder to tease out confounders). As stated here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8057368/ "The [American Diabetes Association] also stated that using sugar substitutes does not make an unhealthy choice healthy; rather, it makes such a choice less unhealthy." Even if more research changes/challenges these conclusions, it's probably better for people to think of things this way instead of assuming it's ok to binge on diet drinks.

I love your work in general, but “Aspartame Is Safe” might be bit premature. Granted, it’s overwhelmingly being approved these days. I wonder if our studies have been asking the right questions. Working as a server, I recall several conversations involving servers from many restaurants discussing the peculiar diet coke* refill phenomenon. Customers drinking diet soft drinks (most often Diet Coke) would typically drink at least 2 and often 3 or 4 refills, compared to sugar sweetened softdrink drinkers, for whom 1 refill was usually enough. I know anecdotal evidence isn’t given much credence, but I’m convinced there’s something abnormal about that refill rate. It sure looks like addictive behavior, even if there’re no physiological withdrawal symptoms. * I live in Coca-cola country, and specifically in a region where “coke” describes anything elsewhere called pop, soda, cola, et c.
