"I know you believe you already know how my Re/Gen capsule functions," I told Nyssa as I tried to maintain my calm professional demeanour, "But it really is in your best interest to pay close attention during this briefing."
The perplexing young woman nodded absentmindedly, "Yeah go on Jenny, I'm listening."
I found that somewhat hard to believe, and instead of continuing with the briefing I ended up quietly watching as my patient continued exploring the featureless white room where I met with all my patients.
Up until this point almost everyone else I'd ever had in here simply stayed put while I spoke with them. For the crew of the Kára a Re/Gen pod was nothing special, they'd all had at least one or two prior experiences with other units. The people I'd helped since then had a variety of reactions, but they'd all followed a similar pattern.
The first time Rebecca and I met she paced back and forth like a caged animal. And when the despair got to her she collapsed into a chair I'd had to create, in order to keep her off the floor. Sarah on the other hand stood there and inundated me with countless questions about how I functioned, where I was created, and by whom. Tamsin was similar, although she wasn't as intense since she'd been prepared in advance. Cammie was fascinated by the experience, and excited to learn more about both me and herself. Even Amanda was excited about what I could do for her, while her questions were more of an ethical or moral nature.
Through every consultation, whether my patients were upset, emotional, excited, or confused, they'd all primarily stayed on their side of the chamber. Until now. From almost the moment she appeared Nyssa Voss began exploring. She walked around the room, poking and touching the walls, she crouched down to do the same for the floor. I had no doubt she'd have examined the ceiling as well if she'd been able to reach it.
Nyssa ended up behind me as she continued her examination of the featureless white walls, and I found myself staring at her with a perplexed look on my face.
"Jenny?" she asked while she continued touching the wall behind me. "You're not talking. I thought you said this was some kind of important briefing or whatever."
I blinked then frowned, "Sorry. It's just, I find your lack of attention to be distracting."
She twisted to look over her shoulder at me and insisted, "I told you I'm listening."
"Maybe it's different for AIs? But I use my ears to listen to things," she added in a teasing tone. "That leaves the rest of my senses available for other things."
I continued staring at her for a few more seconds before sighing, "Very well... As I was saying, my capsule is not a 'healing pod', that's a common misconception. The Re/Gen process is actually meant to refresh, rejuvenate, and regenerate a user's body, returning it to perfect specifications."
"As a field unit," I continued as I turned to face the usual direction even though my patient was still poking at the seamless wall behind me, "My functions are somewhat restricted. And while I've managed to expand my capabilities in some areas, I remain limited by certain factors. The most important of which is access to body files. As I lack the hardware and software to perform intake scans, the only files in my library are - Ah!"
I gasped in surprise and jumped slightly when my patient unexpectedly poked my shoulder from behind.
"What was that for?" I asked as I spun around to face her again.
"You're real!" Nyssa grinned. "I can touch you in here!"
I frowned at her, "I am real whether or not my image is solid, Miss Voss."
The young woman sounded sincere as she apologized, "I'm sorry Jenny. I didn't mean it that way. I know you're a real person even when you're a hologram. What I meant to say is you're not a hologram in here, you're solid. You're touchable! And you have a sense of touch, since you felt me poke you."
"Of course," I nodded. "Perhaps you didn't hear me earlier when I explained that this briefing room is akin to a shared dream? We're both here thanks to the neural -"
Nyssa interrupted again, "Yeah I got that. That's weird too though, don't you think? Like if it's a dream, then who's dream is it? I'm guessing it's yours, because if it was my dream it'd be a lot less boring in here. At least there'd be some cool stuff around, you know? Something to play with, like some games or whatever."
"How are you supposed to focus on anything?" she added with a frown. "All this nothingness is so distracting!"
I blinked at her again as I failed to come up with a response to that statement. Meanwhile she'd already wandered away from me, to get a closer look at the text that was floating on one side of the chamber.
"How do these letters work?" she asked. "Like they're just hanging here in the air! I thought they might be projected on a screen, but there's nothing there holding them up."
I sighed and shook my head, "As I already explained, this is a simulation, not unlike a dream."
Unfortunately it seemed like my words were falling on deaf ears. Again. Nyssa was still examining the status message. In fact she'd reached out and started messing with it.
"Oh cool!" she exclaimed. "The letters are solid! And check it out, you can rearrange them!"
Sure enough she'd done just that. Instead of "Patient Briefing" the floating text now read "Bite if Parenting."
I found myself surprised again as I stared. Not so much at Nyssa's antics, but the fact that she'd found an anagram for the status message so quickly.
After another second or two I forced myself to focus again, "Alright it seems like you're not interested in my briefing, so let's move on to the reason you're here -"
"Yeah!" she exclaimed as she spun around to face me again. "I want fox ears and a tail, just like my sister! More than that, I want to look like her too! So we look like sisters, you know? I don't want to be identical, I mean twinsies would definitely be a lot of fun and there'd be so many ways to exploit that? The problem is she's way too small."
Miss Voss continued her stream-of-thought with barely a pause for breath, "I don't want to be a tiny little pipsqueak foxgirl. Granted she's cute, but I kind of like being bigger than her, you know? Makes it easier to bully her and tease her. And the more I think of it, the more I want to do that for Jaycee too. Like it's cool she's my size now? But it'd be cooler if I was a couple inches taller, you know? Not a lot, I don't want people thinking I'm some kind of Amazonian warrior woman. I still want to be cute and all. But yeah, I need to be tall enough to effectively tease and bully a couple people. And I want to look like Amanda's big sister, with the fox ears and the fox tail."
When she finally went quiet I ended up staring at her for another second or two before asking, "That's your primary motivation? You want to be able to tease and bully your sister and Jaycee Wheeler?"
"Sure," Nyssa shrugged. Then she turned and started rearranging the floating text again as she admitted, "Ok maybe that's not my main goal, getting the fox ears and tail is my primary concern. But the teasing and bullying is definitely in the top five, you know?"
When she was done my "Patient Briefing" status text now read "infinite Pet Brag" which left me feeling surprised yet again.
Finally Nyssa looked back at me and asked, "So you said you've been expanding your limits or something. How's that work, what sorts of cool fun things can you do? Or is the sky the limit here?"
I tore my eyes off the status message and looked back at my patient again, "Unfortunately the range of modifications I have access to is rather finite. I can adjust height up and down, I have a number of options in terms of body shape and size, muscle to fat ratio, and so forth."
Rather than continue describing the various possibilities I stopped there. I realized that path would ultimately lead to me having to describe some rather exotic options I'd gained from Idun's library. And apart from the embarrassment of discussing that sort of thing, I had a feeling Nyssa was the kind of person who'd want to try them out specifically because it made me squirm. I could also easily imagine her using that to tease her sister. Or Jaycee Wheeler.
So instead I suggested, "Rather than listing all the possibilities, it might be easier if you simply visualize what you want. Then I'll do my best to accommodate your desires, and come up with a facsimile that will hopefully satisfy you."
Nyssa pouted as she shuffled the floating letters into yet another anagram, "finite triP Begin."
Then she closed her eyes, "Alright Jenny. Fire up your neural interface thingy because here it comes!"
The moment I accessed her surface thoughts I found myself fighting to maintain my composure yet again. Perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised, but it seemed as though most of her thoughts were focused on sex. I was able to extract her desired form from the rest of the mature imagery though, and fortunately she wasn't looking for anything too challenging.
The only real concern I had was giving Nyssa what she wanted would mean re-using Major Heidi Ruud's body file a second time. When I started helping the Demeter's crew I told myself I'd never do that, I promised myself that each file in my library would only ever be used for a single patient. I didn't want to end up with identical clones out there, I knew that would lead to trouble sooner or later.
Then again I'd already broken that rule once, when I temporarily used my girlfriend's file to disguise Captain Piper prior to the confrontation with Leon Jamison. And in this case, Nyssa didn't want to be an identical clone of her sister. So maybe that would be my new rule? I'd only re-use files if there were enough distinguishing characteristics that the patients wouldn't become duplicates or clones of each other.
From there it only took me a half second to duplicate Major Ruud's original file and apply the various modifications and adjustments. Then I spawned a preview of Nyssa's new body in the usual spot across from the status text.
The new figure stood about five feet nine inches tall, which was at the high end of average for women. It put her four inches above Jaycee Wheeler's new height, and nine inches taller than the Demeter's first officer. And that was just the beginning of the changes.
Nyssa's new body would share her sister's tall pointed vulpine ears and long floofy tail, but her fur and hair would be a different colour. Where Amanda's was a deeper orangey-red tone, Nyssa's would be lighter, more like an orangey-blonde hue. And while the preview body's face was recognizably similar to that of Amanda Voss, Nyssa's eyes would be a pale greenish-gold rather than the amber colour of her sister. Her new body would share Mx Wheeler's athletic build. Nyssa also shared Jaycee's desire for a more substantial bust.
The last thing she wanted was perhaps the biggest surprise, and it wouldn't have been possible without that rather embarrassing modification file I'd found in Idun's database. I hesitated briefly before applying that mod, but quickly decided it wasn't any of my business why she wanted it. Or what she planned on doing with it.
"There you go," I spoke up a moment later, when I realized Miss Voss wasn't paying attention yet again. She was still messing with the floating status text, and hadn't noticed the preview body was available. "Is that to your liking?"
Nyssa glanced at me, then followed my gaze to the opposite side of the room. Her expression shifted to a wide smile as she nodded, "Oh yeah!"
She marched right over to the preview body, and of course the first thing she did was poke it right in the chest. Then she giggled as she poked it a second time, "Oh gosh I can touch her too! Jiggle jiggle!"
I found myself focusing intently on the blank wall directly across from me as I asked again, "Is that to your liking? If we begin the Re/Gen process that will become your new body."
"And as you may recall," I added firmly, "Once we begin we cannot stop. Your current body will be gone forever. The Re/Gen process cannot be reversed."
Nyssa continued closely examining her potential new body, and it seemed like she'd stopped listening to me again. Instead she commented with a naughty giggle, "This is amazing Jenny! I wasn't sure you could do it, but it's going to be so awesome never needing a strap again! Is this thing going to be fully functional?"
By that point my cheeks were flushed, and I kept my eyes intently focused on the blank wall in front of me. I tried to keep my tone professional as I replied, "That modification has all the expected functionality and provides full sensory feedback. The body however lacks the er, hardware to produce sperm."
"Your normal reproductive system will be fully fertile though," I felt compelled to add, "So while that specific modification cannot impregnate anyone, you would still be able to become pregnant and carry a child yourself."
She seemed to think that over for a moment then nodded, "Yeah ok that works."
"Hey if I do have kids would they inherit my ears and tail?" she added. "What about all the other stuff?"
That was actually a good question that very few of my patients ever asked. I explained, "Your new genetics will be those of the original owner of that body, and your chosen modifications will have an effect on your new DNA. However none of those modifications extend to your ova, which will contain the original unaltered genome of your new body. So any offspring you may have in the future will not inherit your vulpine or any other modifications."
"Ah ok," she nodded slowly as she continued inspecting her new body. "Makes sense I guess."
I might have been tempted to call her close examination highly inappropriate, except for that fact that it was ultimately her own new body she was all but molesting.
After a few more seconds I decided to try and get the briefing back on track, "You're pleased with this preview then?"
"Yeah this is perfect," she grinned. Then she added with a shrug, "I mean, we can always change it up later right? If it turns out I want to adjust something after the fact?"
I hesitated, "As Amanda has told you several times, my Re/Gen capsule is not a toy. But having said that, you are correct. It is possible to make minor modifications going forward. However you will be locked into this basic body file, so you -"
"So I'll always look like Amanda's sister," she interrupted yet again. "Which is what I wanted all along."
I stifled a sigh but replied, "That's right."
Nyssa grinned as she looked to me and announced, "Begin it, fart pine!"
For a moment I thought maybe one of my processors had finally started to fail. I stared at her for another second or two before blinking, "Excuse me?"
She gestured towards the floating status message across from where she and the preview body were waiting. And sure enough she must have found another anagram while I was busy generating the preview, because the floating text now read "Begin it fart Pine."
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to try and maintain my professional composure, then focused on my patient once more. "Nyssa Voss, do you consent to the Re/Gen process?"
"Hell yeah!" she grinned widely. "Let's go already!"
With her consent secured I saved the preview body with all its modifications into a new file designated Voss_Nyssa. Then as I applied the sedative and anaesthetic effects to my patient I said, "Please relax. In a moment you'll be in a deep sleep..."

I love her so much. This just feels so much like how i would act in that situation, well if i wasnt on meds. But she is like a mirror image of me when my ADHD and Tism align for something
