Self-portraits at the hotel - bochum

Ich habe es endlich mal geschafft, ein paar der Selbstportraits zu bearbeiten, die ich in Bochum gemacht habe. Und weil ich mich – mal wieder – nicht entscheiden kann, gibt’s die Bilder sowohl in Farbe als auch in Schwarz-Weiß. 😄
Ich würde so gern öfter Zeit für Selbstportraits haben, einfach weil ich noch so viele schöne Teile habe, die ich gerne festhalten würde. Aber momentan rennt die Zeit, während meine To-do-Liste immer länger wird – und ich frage mich, ob ich mir jemals wirklich gewünscht habe, erwachsen zu sein. 😆 Wo ist eigentlich die Zeit hin? Dieses Jahr werde ich 33, und oft fällt es mir schwer, mir selbst zu sagen, dass ich nichts überstürzen muss. Vor allem nicht, wenn ich an meine neue Wohnung denke. Mein Kopf sagt mir ständig: Das ist nicht deine Endstation. Vielleicht, weil ich so stark den Drang verspüre, auszuwandern. Einen anderen Job zu haben. Und gleichzeitig weiß ich, dass es nichts bringt, ständig in der Zukunft zu leben. Aber die Angst vorm Älterwerden ist da – und sie wird jedes Jahr ein bisschen größer.
Vor allem, wenn ich sehe, wie viele in meinem Umfeld scheinbar „erwachsener“ leben – mit Eigentum, Karriere und Kindern. Vergleichen ist Gift. Es lähmt. Und trotzdem springt mein Kopf oft genau da hin. Besonders in Momenten, in denen ich mich sowieso schon überfordert oder festgefahren fühle. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich damit allein bin.
Ich wünschte, wir würden alle ehrlicher miteinander sprechen. Aber so oft versucht man in unserer Gesellschaft, jemand zu sein, der man eigentlich gar nicht ist – manchmal, ohne es selbst zu merken. Weil man nie die Zeit hatte, sich wirklich kennenzulernen. Ich hatte immer gehofft, dass diese Traurigkeit und Schwere irgendwann verschwindet, die ich besonders während meines Studiums gespürt habe, wenn ich an unsere Gesellschaft denke. Aber in Wahrheit verändert sie sich einfach nur. Wenn ich in der Kantine sitze und höre, wie andere über ihren Job sprechen … wie wichtig sie sich und ihre Arbeit nehmen … dann löst das oft noch mehr in mir den Wunsch aus, alles hinzuschmeißen und neu anzufangen. Mich mit Menschen zu umgeben, die bodenständiger sind. Die nicht glauben, dass sie als Projektmanager, IT-ler, Scrum-Master oder Instructional Designer (hello, das bin ich) das Rad neu erfinden oder Berufe ausüben, ohne die die Welt nicht überleben würde.
Wir sind als Gesellschaft so oft abgehoben und leben in einem Luxus, den wir kaum noch wahrnehmen. Ich nehme mich da nicht aus. Wie oft habe ich das Gefühl, nicht genug zu haben. Noch mehr kaufen zu müssen, um glücklich zu sein. Auch mein Wunsch, auszuwandern, ist im Grunde ein Luxusproblem – weil ich es theoretisch einfach machen könnte. Und wie viele Menschen gibt es, für die das immer ein Traum bleiben wird?
Ich hatte ja gesagt, Unfiltered soll ein bisschen wie ein Tagebuch sein. Zumindest ab und zu. Und auch wenn diese Gedanken nichts mit den Bildern zu tun haben, beschäftigen sie mich gerade sehr. Vielleicht gehören sie aber doch dazu. Weil sie da sind – immer. Ob bewusst oder unbewusst.

I finally got around to editing some of the self-portraits I took in Bochum. And since I (as always) couldn’t decide, I’m sharing them in both black and white and color. 😄
I really wish I had more time for self-portraits – there are so many beautiful pieces I’d love to capture. But right now, time is flying, and my to-do list just keeps getting longer. And honestly, I keep wondering if I ever truly wanted to grow up. 😆 Where did all the years go? I’m turning 33 this year, and I often find it hard to remind myself that I don’t need to rush things.
Especially when I think about my new apartment. My mind keeps telling me: This isn’t your final stop. Probably because I feel such a strong pull to move abroad… to find a different job… and yet I know it doesn’t help to constantly live in the future. But the fear of getting older is real – and it seems to grow with every year.
Especially when I see so many friends and acquaintances living what looks like a more “grown-up” life – with property, careers, and kids. Comparison is poison. It paralyzes. And yet, my mind still defaults to it. Especially in moments when I already feel stuck or overwhelmed. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
I really wish we were more honest with each other. But so often in our society, we try to be someone we’re not – sometimes without even noticing. Simply because we never had the time to get to know ourselves. I always hoped the sadness and heaviness I started feeling during my studies – especially when thinking about society – would eventually go away. But in truth, it just keeps evolving.
When I sit in the cafeteria and overhear people talking about their jobs… how seriously they take themselves and their work… it often makes me want to drop everything and start over.
To be around people who are more grounded. Who don’t believe they’re reinventing the wheel just because they’re project managers, IT specialists, Scrum Masters – or Instructional Designers (yep, that’s me).
As a society, we’re often so disconnected from reality and live in a kind of luxury we barely even notice anymore. I include myself in that. I often feel like I don’t have enough. That I need to buy more to be happy. Even my desire to emigrate is a luxury thought – because I could, at least in theory. And how many people will never have that chance?
I did say Unfiltered would be a bit like a diary. At least from time to time. And even if these thoughts have nothing to do with the photos, they’ve been heavy on my mind. And maybe, in a way, they are connected. Because they’re always there – wherever I go. Whether I’m aware of them or not.

I really appreciate that you don’t get sucked into the vapid conversations where people define themselves by their job titles. We are so much more than what we do to pay the bills and yeah, no one is changing the world just by being a product manager. And I definitely have reflected on my own privilege in being able to move abroad while plenty of others can’t. I don’t have anything to add there but just recognizing the same luxury for myself. But to be clear, I do believe that you’ll move abroad. I believe in you! But that doesn’t mean you can’t build a lovely home and wonderful connections in your current place. I feel like this comment is already too long but I always love your self portraits and these are no exception. So beautiful!
