My folks are divorcing this year after 38 years, my mother is religious does not believe in divorce, she has always been the breadwinner, she bought the house I grew up in and shielded me from seeing his substance use issues (crack) the second he was the age to get social security he started cheating , she confronted him and he didn't care - he just left. He demanded a divorce but would not file the paperwork, insiting she ought to pay for the filing fees since she earned more than him... My mom did not want a divorce so a year went by and she finally decided that she would file since he was clearly not coming back - Was a brilliant tactic. Now she is the person who " initiated" the divorce, so my dad gets half the house value and my mom has to sell it. There is anything I can say to anybody it is please understand that there is no prize for staying married just to say you stayed married - don't think just because you are "holding someone down" that people will bite the hand that feeds them as soon as they think they can
