I've had a theory since Gemma's episode that the purpose is to have an automatic severance for the entire world where people don't experience the bad parts of life. Your innie is automatically activated based on the situation, not the location. My theory is based on the rooms gemma was in, they were all mundane bad things (dentist, writing thank you notes, crib disassembly) and also the severed birthing/crib stuff. Also, I don't think Gemma was the only one. Mark worked on 24 files for Gemma, what about the files Dylan and Irving worked on, who were they for? I think everything done so far was the research and development to launch this automated severance. It would change the world as we know it (even though you need the good and the bad to live a full life)
