Poor Tobizaru! Robbed of that one

Shawn Chidester

I wonder if the other judges just didn't want to question the gyoji's ruling. As a little extra sign of respect during his last basho. Not saying I agree with it. Just wondering.

Chad Hagans

The bottom of the foot can. Not the top.

Chad Hagans

The top of both Tobi’s feet touch before Koto hits the ground

King Rama

No, your foot can touch the bales

King Rama

Ozeki privilege. This reminds me of the time Enho clearly beat Takakeisho and they overruled it.

Raymond Sosnowski

Here is one of the holes in the sumo scoring regulations - seems to me that the 'shimpan' in the video booth SHOULD be able to call a mono-ii, or some sort of protest mechanism - Japanese martial arts like Kendo and Naginata have such a mechanism (I know this as a certified Naginata shimpan & former Kendo player).

Jason Harris

ok -I'll have a look

Michael Tremblay

They soooooo bad want a new Yokozuna - now they are giving him wins!!!

Stu H.

No way

Art Linwood

It looked to me that the top of Tobizaru's foot hit the straw bail. Maybe just the top of the toes, but that would be enough.

Collin Davis

I have seen multiple comments regarding this gyoji’s history of questionable decisions, but I have not seen a name for him to verify anything.

Austin K

Moments like this with no way to require them to look at it initiated by either wrestlers once per tournament is disappointing. Every wrestler there for at least 1 year should get a challenge.

Austin K

But dead body would not apply here as Tobizau was also forcing Kotozakura out with an intentional move. I would be curious if this judge has a history given higher rank wrestlers very favorable outcomes.

TheRealTeal

Not sure I agree with the decision even with this rule, but thanks for context!

TheRealTeal

That’s TWICE Tobizaru has been robbed this tournament. Sheesh!

Matt Boom

the top of Tobizaru's left foot touches the ground inside the ring at 5:49

From a bit of Yandexing, it looks like the winner is not always the one who touches the ground last. From reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/Sumo/comments/6eo809/sumo_101_the_rules/: What's this "dead body" rule I hear about? The term is shini-tai. It's a controversial rule. If a wrestler touches the ground first, but puts the opponent in a position where there is no possible chance of recovery due to the superior sumo of the first wrestler, the judges may rule that the first wrestler won. It's a highly subjective rule. From wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shini-tai: Their explanation is usually that the winning wrestler used a specific technique to overpower his opponent and was in clear control of the match. They grant him the victory regardless of whether or not he touched the ground first.

Barb

Definitely Tobizaru's win!

Roswell Richardson

Koto got away with one in my opinion

Jim Bulger

Tobizaru was ROBBED. I'm the biggest Kotozakura fan you'll find, but he lost this match. How was this not overturned?!?
