As to the genre name, some people are trying to get "search action" off the ground to replace "Metroidvania", but it doesn't seem to have taken, yet.

Brett is right with the EMMI counter. You can learn the timing. It's not easy to do, but speed runners and whatnot have that stuff down pat.

In case they don't look it up, the developer's said that the timing of the EMMI counter changed every time specifically so you can't reliably practice it or get good at it. The idea is it's absolutely badass when you pull it off, but that you can't ever feel like you have a safe escape. That said, I have been dying for this series to hit. So excited.
