I don't think this is actually a good solution? Like, for one the soldiers still have military leaders among them, their families are still over on the mainland or wherever, they have a different culture from the locals and because of their previous mission and circumstances would view the locals as an other, and so on. What would stop them from just subjugating the locals as they were already going to? Considering how many of the early groups of Europeans acted in America while having only their current small group of armed men, and with no expectation of reinforcements, losing their ships would likely not have made them less conquer-y. Then there's the fact that them not returning will trigger an investigation, at which point you have to either have to blow up whomever comes too, or let the soldiers regain ocntact with home, making them no longer as stranded, at least in their minds, and making it more likely they carry out their old mission, if they haven't already. And once the soldiers are among the natives, you can't just bomb them from orbit. Which isn't to say that that would have been the right decision, just that it won't be an option any more. It kind of feels like this 'solution' was a result of trying to fit the classic narrative structure wherin a character learns something new, and that allows them to ifnd a better, more palatable, solution to a problem. Except the better solution is not actually better. (Maybe the flaws in the thinking are actually the point and will be talked about in a latter chapter. These are just my thoughts based on this one.)

I am going to guess that the people on Earth are going to have Mom's telling their kids that they better be good or a god is going to kill you from orbit.
