Also, the reference to war in Ukraine has a certain feeling of unreality - like, the pandemic is pretty much unavoidable for placing the story in time, the way 9/11 was unavoidable in American media in the 2000s, but Ukraine stuff feels a bit more like something you could get away with not mentioning/explain away as having been butterflied. The perils of setting a story in real time and keeping up with real events, I suppose. Also it makes me think about magical realism, but I'm getting a note here that says that it's only magical realism if it's from the magical realism region of South America, otherwise it's just sparkling surrealism
