🕑 Added 2024-11-08 16:15:07 +0000 UTCBoy did those 5 weeks fly by quickly! If you’re out of the loop, in the last Dev Log we announced that we’re jumping into the deep end of game development with the long-term goal of improving our asset usability and funding diversity - more about that here!
I’m happy to say that this experiment was a success! Coming from basically zero game dev experience, in the last five weeks, we created Splatter Dash: an explosive, punchy, momentum-based platformer in which the objective is to cover the level in paint.

It took us a little while to nail down the gameplay design and mechanics, but we figured it out in the end and managed to create five test levels. We’d love to hear what you think in the comments below 🙂
What’s next?
We’re probably not going any further with the idea of Splatter Dash since it doesn’t tie into Poly Haven as an asset platform, but the experience of creating a game ourselves is the first step in a larger vision of growing Poly Haven’s value to you guys.
Next year, we’ll take the next step of working on something more serious, collaborating with “actual” game developers who know what they’re doing while also building relevant content for Poly Haven at the same time.
We don’t know exactly what that will look like yet, but I’ll be sure to let you know when we do!

Definitely on the right track, finish a mini game and abandon it right after is the safest way to learn. 1 suggestion: Cut down as many unique button behavior as possible. For example, you don't need to separate mid-air dash and ground pound as 2 actions. If you want unique interaction, make it an intractable in the world is usually way easier to design around.

Yay I finished all the levels. Using a controller was way easier than keyboard. I liked the rest/bonus levels. At first I wasn't sure whether to feel sorry for the sponge character or not, but then after the tutorial when I realized the point was to paint every surface, then I didn't feel bad smacking it into walls. Hope your team got some good experiences out of it. Congrats!
