Spoilers...... People knew of the doppelganger/Elena when Elena was a little girl. That's what Bonnie's mom says. Abbey took out Michael to stop word from getting out, but if people found out before they'd very likely find out again. Plus we know Isobel found Katherine before Damon/Stefan ever entered her life, and Katherine, Isobel and John were all in-the-know about Elena being the doppelganger, with Katherine plotting to use her to win her freedom at least a year in advance of coming to Mystic Falls. So multiple stories tell us Damon and Stefan were truly inconsequential to Elena being hunted and used as a doppelganger

elijah is an orginal there was just glazing klaus but klaus is the most powerful and most evil out of the orignals but not by a whole lot

Well Damon more so is one of the primary reasons the originals are coming for Elena rn. Him opening the tomb is what alerted the people that Katherine is alive, which also led to the discovery of the doppelgänger. It also kinda led to Katherine discovering Elena but then again, she knew that a doppelgänger would appear bc she had a secret baby. But I think she was only desperate to bargain w/ Klaus bc people now know that Katherine isn’t dead. So he’s kinda to blame and even if Stefan saved her then left, the tomb would’ve still got open bc of Damon. Remember he wasn’t even in town to follow Stefan & cause him trouble like Stefan thought. He was there bc of the comet & that was his one chance to open the tomb.
