Something I didnt touch on enough is having a support system around you. In the early days, having people in the scene around you with connections that are tangible to your level is going to help you a lot more than someone with strings attached. Help people and they'll help you.
The end of this discussion is always create value. If you can't create direct monetary value for an agent or artist manager, you could still provide value in otherwise to your network. Where you provide value you will receive help.
