Rat Wars could’ve had at least 3 more tracks. I love how tightly woven at release is though with callbacks to previous vocals, motifs, etc. Anthony Fantano said it sounded “samey”. He’s stringy and harsh with his reviews but as a musician, I thought he’d appreciate that. I wonder if real music critics listen to an album in its entirety a few times. If any do, it’s rare. When Jake or Johnny said this was going to be their heaviest darkest album yet (or maybe compared to Vol 4.) I was pumped. I didn’t feel it was heavier or darker until i listened to ashamed with the lyrics in front of me. I got it. As a result I have 2 DKY hats and I get so many interested people that love the message of the hat and see it’s an ingenuous way to bring suicide awareness up in a humorous way.
