I've been looking at getting a new Veritas one for awhile. Definitely pricey, but they make a left-handed version. That might be the only reason I'd make one. If I could build one in less time than it would take to earn the money to buy a new one, it'd be worth it. So the challenge then, is can I build one in less than ~$300 in time and materials.

Joshua: You just encapsulated my entire intellectual journey with this tool. I tried for YEARS to come up with a practical DIY version, but I couldn't get there, especially when used models go for as little as $100.

Hey Rex, any thoughts on taking your grooving plane design and making it into a plough? I figure a couple holes for fence rods, a fence, and maybe a connecting piece for the two depth stops would be a good start. Of course, then you need a second body piece with a skate for when you use wider blades, plus locks for that (and the fence), some way to hold the chisels of different sizes, and... Oh. Now I see why it's easier to buy one. Or make one that uses the traditional irons with a small tang. Never mind, carry on!
